Judie E. Rouse
of Jackson, formerly of Chelsea, Mi.

Age 60, passed away Monday, June 25, 2007 at the Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor. She was born on November 2, 1946 in Clare, Michigan the daughter of Allen L. and Iva M. (Butler) Gerow. Judie had lived in Chelsea most of her life and worked for Adair Printing and Baker-Johnson companies in Dexter. She enjoyed ’concert hopping’ with her friends, country music, her flowers in her garden, as well as hugs and kisses from her grandchildren. On April 4, 1964 she married Gale H. Rouse, and he survives. Also surviving are three children, Jenette (Jeff) Fullerton, Teresa (Brian) Ferguson, all of Grass Lake, and Deanna (Tony) Hafner of Munith; one brother Stewart (Irene) Gerow of Clare, brother-in-law Larry Casner, of Shepherd; nine grandchildren, Jillian, Abigale, Carrie, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Mitchell, Andrew, Zachary, and Jacob Jude on the way; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and DEAR friends. She was preceded in death by one sister Peggy Casner, and her parents. Funeral services will be Saturday June 30, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea, with Pastor Doris Sparks officiating. Private burial will take place at River Lawn Cemetery in Denver Twp. MI. Expressions of sympathy can be made to Zion Lutheran Church. William E. Kalmbach

Bill was born on February 18, 1956 in Ann Arbor, Michigan the son of Richard and Mary J. (Hankerd) Kalmbach. William had lived in the area all his life and worked for Hyundai-Kia American Technical Center of Ann Arbor for several years. He graduated from Chelsea High School in 1974, and furthered his education, receiving his degree in Engineering from the University of Michigan. He was an avid U-of-M football fan, and he truly loved his family. On May 15, 1982 he married Elizabeth L. Hoover and together they had two children, Stefan Kalmbach and Brianna Kalmbach, both of Chelsea, and they all survive. Also surviving is his father, Richard and his wife, Mary Alice Kalmbach of Grass Lake, one brother, Douglas (Pat) Kalmbach of Pinckney, and one sister, Lori (Brian) Hughes of Gregory; several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, and his grandparents Ivah Hankerd, and Derrell and Claribel Kniss. Funeral services will be Friday June 29, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea with Deacon Richard Shaneyfelt officiating.

Evelyn E. Lantis

Formerly of Munith

Age 91 passed away at Sparrow hospital on June 26, 2007. She was born the daughter of John and Lavina (Mears) Grosshans on February 23, 1916 in Waterloo Township. On December 21, 1932 she married Duane Lantis and he preceded her in death on March 8, 1986. Evelyn loved music and could play any song by ear on the piano. She also loved traveling the world with her family, and fishing for Lake Perch off the coast of Grand Haven with her son-in-law Howard. Most of all she enjoyed being with her family. Evelyn is survived by her daughters Colleen (Colonel Howard Ret.) Becker of Mason and Darlene (Jim) Goodrich of Lehigh Acres, FL. Also surviving are her grandchildren Sheila (Chuck) Fortino of Lansing, Rod (Kim) Becker of Greenville, WI, Marty Kiersey of Lehigh Acres, FL; great grandchildren Rick, Stefani, Brad, Jessica, Charlie; great-great grandchildren Emily, Matthew, Elizabeth and Drew. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Russell, John and Norman. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 29, 2007 at the Casey-Mitchell funeral home with Rev. Robert J. Willie Carpenter
Of Stockbridge, Mi.

Age 82, died Sunday June 24, 2007 at the Stockbridge Country Manor. He was born on October 6, 1924 in Royalton, Kentucky, the son of Walter and Arizona (Fletcher) Carpenter. Willie had lived in the area since 1938, and enjoyed hunting, bluegrass festivals, feeding the birds, antique cars, and helped build the Philip R. Clarke a great lakes freighter. He had worked on Several farms in the area including Patterson’s and the Baldwin Farm. On August 27, 1945 in Stockbridge he married Virginia Barker and she preceded him in death on June 1, 2007. Surviving are five children, Nick (Diane) Carpenter of Fitchburg Dave Carpenter of Richlands, NC., Ted (Dianna) Carpenter of Fitchburg, Vickey (Wallace) Brown of Prestonsburg, KY., and Jeff (Kim) Carpenter of Fitchburg. Two sisters, Mae Fletcher and Laura Lawrence both of Stockbridge, and One brother Richard Carpenter of Canada. 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by one daughter-in- law, Cheryl Carpenter, one granddaughter, Rebecca Carpenter, one brother Robert Carpenter, one sister Mary Fletcher, and two infant siblings, Kelly and Martha. A memorial service will be Thursday, June 28, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stockbridge with Rev. Robert Castle officiating. Hargus Salisbury of
Jackson, MI

Age 79 went to be with his Lord on June 23, 2007. He passed on to Heaven peacefully, surrounded by his family. He was born the son of Togie and Minnie (Howard) Salisbury on June 13, 1928 in Langley, Kentucky. On November 18, 1950 he married Juanita Vanderpool and she survives. Hargus was a simple man that believed in honesty and respect for one another. He enjoyed the country life, hunting and gardening and his birdhouses, which he painted with his own special touch. Most of all, Hargus loved the Lord and his family, especially his grand children and great-grandchildren. He leaves to cherish his memory, his kind and loving wife Juanita; and his children Peggy Honaker of Jackson, Ricky (Teresa) Salisbury of Jackson and Toby (Patt i) Salisbury of Munith; as well as his grandchildren; Neal and Kevin, Angie, Nicky, Stephanie, Toby Jr., CeeCee, Rob, Nicki, Brandon, Tyler, Jake and Cassidy. Also surviving are his great- grandchildren Madison Rose, Brenna, Cameron and Devin; as well as his sisters Sally Bowen of Plant City, FL, Dora King of Baltimore, MA and Joyce Wroten of WV. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Dickie and one infant daughter Vickie, brothers Sam, Togie Jr., Jim and one infant brother, as well as his sister Rebecca Conley. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Mt. Olive Old Regular Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Brother Estel Hamilton, Brother, Russell Hicks and Brother Scotty Hamilton officiating. Charles M. Schiller
Of Pinckney

Age 55, died Wednesday morning June 20, 2007 at University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor. Mr. Schiller was son of Elwyn R. and Vonda Lee (Dresselhouse) Schiller and was born March 8, 1952 in Tecumseh, Michigan. Chuck had been a life long resident of the area and graduated from Dexter High School. It was in high school that he studied vocational graphics, leading him to a successful career in the Lithography and printing industry. At the time of his death he was he was the Executive Vice President of Thomson-Shore, Inc. His career with Thomson-Shore spanned 35 years with the last 10 serving as Executive Vice President. Mr. Schiller held many positions at Thomson-Shore including pressman, bindery supervisor, administrative supervisor, customer service manager, manufacturing process analyst and finally vice president. For many years Chuck served on the Graphic Arts Advisory Committee, which is a function of the vocational programs of South and West Washtenaw Consortium. He is a past president of the Ann Arbor Litho Club and was very active in numerous Club activities including the Dexter Chamber of Commerce. Surviving are his four children, twin daughters Jessica Schiller of Pinckney and Monica (Scott) Schiller-Wren of Hartland, two sons, Timothy Mammel and Joseph (Becky) Mammel all of Pinckney;
seven grandchildren Kayla, Oliva, Nadia, Chad, Sumner, Hailey and Paige; his mother, of Gregory, his sister, Audie M. Hampshire, of Portland, Ore., two brothers, Neil (Diane) Schiller of Bloomingdale, Mi., LeRoy (Dawn) Schiller, of Rives Junction, and several nieces and nephews; also his adopted sister, Rosie Blackwell of Waterloo; his sweetie, as Chuck called her,
Ruth Freeman, and her daughter, Rachel, of Chelsea. He was preceded in death by his father on June 14, 2004, and his sister Lucy M. Schiller on July 22, 2006. Marguerite F. Clayton
Formerly of Chelsea and Howell

Passed away on June 15, 2007 at age 85 after living a rich, full life. She was born to Albert and Frances (Hinds) DeWolf on May 24, 1922 in Hamburg, Michigan. On December 24, 1942 she married Gerald Clayton, he preceded her in death on April 2, 2003. She was a resident of Ann Arbor most of her life. In retirement years, Jerry and Marguerite lived a country life in Howell. Mrs. Clayton enjoyed collecting and her home in Howell had a ’Rose Room’which was filled with dolls, antiques and rose collectibles. Marguerite spent many enjoyable hours researching genealogy and making scrap books for her family. Mrs. Clayton was a graduate of Ann Arbor High School. She is survived by her son Jack (Margaret) Clayton of Dexter and her daughter Judy Quezada of Mexico City, Mexico. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great, great, granddaughter, who was born on June 16, 2007, one sister Helen St. George of Adrian, MI. and many other beloved relatives. Age 51 passed away at Foote Hospital surrounded by his family on June 19, 2007. He was born the son of Lawrence and Flossie (Salyers) Hackworth on June 23, 1955 in Tecumseh, MI. Terry enjoyed Tigers baseball, fishing, Bluegrass music and having a good time. Most of all he loved his family especially his grandchildren. Terry is survived by his children Ron (Roxann) Trusty of Napoleon, Teresa (Bryon) Wiley of Stockbridge and Shelby Lynn Hackworth of Salyersville, KY as well as 6 grandchildren. Age 98, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at the Chelsea Retirement Community,Towsley Village. She was born April 29, 1909 in Chelsea, the daughter of John W. and Ethel (Smith) Haselswerdt. She married Hans Grossman on December31, 1941 in Ann Arbor, and he preceded her in death on August 23, 1995. She graduated from Chelsea High School and earned a Life Certificate in teaching and a B.S. degree from Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti, where she was affiliated with Pi Delta Theta Sorority. She attended graduate school at the University of Michigan. She was a member of the U.M. Alumni Association, the M.E.A. and the N.E.A. for many years. She taught school for 25 years the last 15 years were in Chelsea and she retired in 1971. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Chelsea and had charge of the Cradle Roll for several years. She is survived by: one daughter, Susan K. (Richard) Urbanek of Canton, MI.; one son, Gary H. Grossman of Chelsea; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two nieces, one nephew and several cousins. Shewas preceded in death by one sister and brother-in-law, Theodore and DorothyStimpson, and one brother and sister-in-law, Lyle and Dora Haselswerdt. A family grave-side service will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery, Chelsea with the Rev. Dr. Barbara Edema officiating. Jerry Whitaker of Chelsea, MIAge 59 went to be with his Lord on June 16, 2007. He was born the son of Cecil and Etoyla (Fitzpatrick) Whitaker on November 1, 1947 in Salyersville,KY. On August 16, 1967 he married Elaine O. Thorpe and she survives. Jerrywas an excavator who enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, 67%rsquo; Corvettes and motorcycles. He also enjoyed wood working, especially with oak. Jerry was a musician, who loved to play the banjo, his mandolin and listen to and play Bluegrass and Gospel Music. Most of all, he loved the Lord and his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother of Salyersville, KY; his children Lisa (Michael) Van Riper of Chelsea, John (Lori) Whitaker of Flat Rock, Melody (Asst. Pastor, Adam) Summers, Brian (Lindsay) Whitaker, and Kimberly Whitaker all of Chelsea, as well as nine grandchildren; his brotherGordon (Esther) Whitaker of Waterloo, Danny Whitaker of Salyersville, KY and Shayne (Donna) Whitaker of Standish, KY. Age 66 passed away at her home on June 15, 2007. She was born the daughter of Leon R. and Ruth E. (Latter) Phelps in Jackson, Michigan on February 16, 1941. Sandra was a person full of life that loved to make people laugh. She enjoyed playing bingo and fishing for anything that would bite her hook. Most of all she loved being with her family and grandchildren. Sandra is survived by her children Sherry (James) Pennewill of Jackson, Michael (Norma) DuBois of AZ, Marie (Michael) Vere of AZ, Kimberly (Robert) Walker of Gregory, Patty (Ray) Stevens of Jackson and James (Shawney) Moore of AZ. Also surviving are her 21 grandchildren with one on the way, four great grandchildren also with one on the way and her brother James Phelps of Michigan Center. Calvin L Ferryof PinckneyFormerly of Monroe Age 69 passed away at this home surrounded by his family on June 13, 2007. He was born the son of Leonard C. and Marie R. (Rath) Ferry on July 16, 1937 in Monroe Michigan. On November 8 1958 he married Judy D. Rohrbach and she survives. Calvin loved the outdoors, hunting, snowmobiling, shooting trap as well as archery and in his later years he discovered golf. He loved to travel whether on a cruise to Alaska or just trips with the family to the cabin on Lily Lake. Calvin was a past president of the Dundee Sportsman’s Club and also held many positions at St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hillsdale where he was a longtime member. Most of all he enjoyed being with his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Vicki (Bruce) Vergote of Reed City, MI, Brenda (Steve) Bishop of Pinckney, MI and Lori (Troy) Briggs of Dundee. Also surviving is his brother James Ferry of Spokane, WA. Also surviving are five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Patricia Lou Tompkins

Age 76, went home to be with her Lord on June 9, 2007. Pat was born to the late Frances Elaine (Hill) and Eugene Ringquest on December 9, 1930 in Reed City, MI. She grew up in the Woodland, MI area. She married Orville W. Tompkins on October 21, 1951, and he preceded her in death in October 1990. As a child Pat loved her horse, Star. She attended Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. She was a teacher in a one-room school in Coloma, MI. After many years as a homemaker, she worked at Mac-Dee, Inc, during her older children’s high school years. Then for many years, Orv and Pat owned and operated an Ann Arbor Tidy Car business. She was also employed at the EPA and Pictures Plus in Ann Arbor. Her hobbies included reading, photography, painting, writing, and baking, especially homemade bread—which she would bake ten loaves at a time! She was a beloved and active member of North Sharon Baptist Church in Grass Lake. Pat is survived by her children: Bradford (Kathy) Tompkins of Grass Lake, Christopher (Robin) Tompkins of Chelsea, Susan (Roger) Brown of Tecumseh, Mary Ann (Robert) Shears of Chelsea, and Dane Tompkins of Chelsea; also 17 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many dear and cherished friends. Age 76, passed away June 6, 2007 at Ingham Regional Medical Care Center, Green Lawn Campus in Lansing, Michigan. She was born on October 25, 1930 in North Hampton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Francesco and Angelina (Serino) DeCarolis. She had lived in the area for the past 10 years coming from Leslie. She enjoyed crosswords, crocheting, talking politics, and her cat, Cookie. Surviving are three kids, Carol Law of Arizona, Kimberly (Randy) Shrader of Pinckney and John (Deborah) Shad of Fitchburg; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mina Martini of Penn. and Carmella Ewers of Indiana. She was preceded in death by one son William Shad and a brother Mark Petruno. Leroy H. Wing
Of Ann Arbor, MI

Age 85 passed away June 6, 2007. He was born the son of Harold and Pauline J. (Finkbeiner) Wing on December 27, 1921 in Ann Arbor, Michigan and has lived on the farm since then. On October 8, 1949 he married Barbara Bradbury and she survives. Leroy was a member of the Dexter United Methodist Church, the Pittsfield Grange and the Washtenaw County Farm Bureau. He loved to talk, even to people he did not know, he enjoyed deer hunting, and also watching them from his house. Most of all he loved his family, the Wing reunion parties and their sesquicentennial farm the family started as one of the pioneering families of Washtenaw County. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Sharon L. (James) Wheeler of Pinckney, Diane M. (Ron Holguin) Wing of San Pedro, CA, Kurt (Louann) Wing of Dexter, and Kevin (Stacey) Wing of Ann Arbor. Also surviving are his grandchildren Ben (Rebecca) Wheeler, Sara Wheeler, Beth Ann (Mike) Fowler, Patrick, Kayla, Brandon, Nathaniel and Hannah Wing; his great grandchildren Grady Wheeler and Whitley Fowler, along with his brother-in-law Rufus Coffey. Ruth E. Horning
Of Chelsea, MI

After a three year battle with cancer, age 63, Ruth Horning passed away peacefully with family at her side while at the Arbor Hospice Residence on Monday, June 4, 2007. She was born November 12, 1943 in Stockbridge, MI, the daughter of John and Sylvia (Thompson) Prentice. Ruth had lived in the Chelsea area her entire life and spent her childhood life on the family farm just outside of Chelsea. She graduated in the top percent of her class from Chelsea High School in 1961. Just as she led her life, she actively pursued many extra-curricular activities serving in many student government positions, and as an active member of the National Honor Society. Ruth found a passion for music and received a scholarship to Interlochen for playing the flute. She also enjoyed playing piano and passed on that love to her daughter Kim. Ruth enjoyed bowling with her friends and was quite proud of the fact she once rolled a 265. She attended Eastern Michigan University, where she achieved her teaching degree in three years. She taught 5th Grade for one year in Garden City, MI. Although her passion for teaching was strong, she decided to stay at home and teach her children what the true values in life were. She did that with a true sense of accomplishment by graduating five wonderful children. Ruth loved scrap booking, and made books for each of her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed writing poems and making greeting cards for all occasions. She enjoyed her family dearly, and along with her husband Neil, never missed her kids’ ball games and activities. Ruth found peace and solitude working in the yard and landscaping activities with her husband Neil. She also enjoyed traveling with Neil as they took in the various sights on cruises they attended. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church and put God at the top of her priorities with an unshakeable faith. She was a member of the Chelsea Homemakers. Ruth’s gift was in taking care of others. She loved her grandchildren, and spent many days teaching them the truly important things in life. Ruth’s gift of compassion for others led her to her most recent job where she served the last 15 years as a home hospice provider caring for many terminally ill patients. Ruth truly made a difference in many lives.

On October 31, 1964 she married Donald R. Forner, and they had two children, Kimberly Ann (Rick) Eder, of Chelsea, and Matthew J. (Lisa) Forner of Southern Indiana. On November 22, 1980 Donald lost his battle with cancer and passed away. On August 14, 1981 at Zion Lutheran Church in Chelsea, she married Neil E. Horning, who has three children: Kimberly Sue (Alan) Roskowski, of Gregory, Paul R. (Amy Neitling) Horning of Dundee, MI, and Randall (Amy) Horning of High Point, N.C. Ruth loved all of her children dearly, and was committed to making a blended family work. In addition to her husband, Neil, and their five children, she is also survived by one sister-in-law, Janet Prentice of Chelsea, and brother-in-law Earl (Diane) Horning of Manchester, former brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Marie Taulbee of Pontiac, Jerome (Mollie) Forner of Springboro, OH, Janet (Luke) Salyer of Nevada, Susan Forner of Chicago, and Thomas (Martha) Forner of Chelsea; also eight grandchildren: James Horning, Logan and Tanner Horning, Corynne and Benjamin Eder, Kali Roskowski, and Zachary and Drew Forner. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Paul Prentice, and former sister-in-law Kay Forner.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Doris Sparks officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at STAFFAN-MITCHELL FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m., and Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or Arbor Hospice.
William Davis Sr.

Age 65, passed away June 1, 2007 at Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids Michigan. He was born on December 30, 1941 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, the son of Ernie and Della (Rowll) Davis. He enjoyed blue grass music, fishing, traveling, telling stories and being with his family. On January 14, 1963 he married Erma Marie West and she survives, also surviving are there children, Tammy (David) Chick of Stockbridge, Ricky (Lisa) Davis of Leslie, William Jr. (Marie) Davis of Byron, Rodney Davis and Crystal (George) Chick all of Stockbridge. Brothers and sisters, Cal, Alton, Earl, Gene, Reed, Catherine, Wanda, Rosalee, Teri, Cleta, Grace as well as 12 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Baby sister Willma, and two adult sisters Jackie and Mary. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stockbridge. Burial will follow at Dansville Cemetery. Age 77, passed away Saturday June 1, 2007 at the Stockbridge Country
Manor. She was born on January 10, 1930 in Sublett County Kentucky the daughter of Dewey and Lilly (Combs) Barker. She had lived in the area most of her life. Flowers, making crafts, puzzles, cooking for everybody and her grandchildren were her favorite pastimes. On August 27, 1945 she married Willie Carpenter in Stockbridge and he survives, also surviving are their children, Nick (Diane) Carpenter of Fitchburg, Dave Carpenter of Richlands NC., Ted (Dianna) Carpenter of Fitchburg, Vickey (Wallace) Brown of Prestonsburg, KY, and Jeff (Kim) Carpenter of Fitchburg. 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 1 daughter in law Cheryl Carpenter and 1 granddaughter Rebbeca Carpenter. A memorial services will be Tuesday June 5, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. from the Jeruel Baptist Church with Pastor Robert Castle officiating. Expressions of sympathy can be made to Stockbridge Area Ambulance. Age 43, passed away May 31, 2007 at his home in Munith in the care of Hospice . He was born on May 23, 1964 in Findlay, Ohio the son of James R. and Irene (Bailey) Conley. Richard worked for FLOW-EZY Filter in Ann Arbor and was a veteran serving in the United States Army. He was a avid sports fan and a wonderful and devoted brother and friend. Surviving are two brothers, Ricky (Karen) Conley of Swayzee, Indiana and Randall R. Conley of Munith, several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant sister. Funeral services will be Monday June 4, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stockbridge with J. Michael Marshall Jr, officiating.
