Of Chelsea, MI

Died on October 11, 2007 at the Chelsea Retirement Community, age 86. She was born on February 6, 1921 in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, to Daniel and Sylvia (Kahoun) Swingle. Lucille was a delightful soul whose kindness, hope and trust were unshakable, even when beset by arthritis and memory loss. Lucille was proud to be a teacher. She put herself through college, graduating from the University of Wisconsin in 1943. She taught in several Wisconsin school districts, but her goal was to teach in Madison. When she lost out on a Madison position in 1949, she interviewed in Ann Arbor and took a post at Jones Junior High. She said many times that life in Ann Arbor had proved to be an acceptable alternative. Lucille married Jerry Wiarda in 1950. Jerry was a widower with two small boys. Her willingness to marry him, be a mother to their children, and ’make a home, ’ was a source of amazement to him throughout their 52-year marriage. She was in charge of her household. She had the respect of her husband and children. Her grandchildren thrived under her attention, and benefited from her sharp teacher’s instincts. Lucille worked for many years in the Cancer Registry department at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, and served on its Board of Deacons. She was a volunteer visitor to hospital patients. She opened her home to out-of-town guests whose family members were receiving long-term treatment at the University of Michigan Hospitals. None left a stranger. She moved to the Chelsea Retirement Community in 2001. Her family is profoundly grateful for the friendship and love shown to Lucille by the CRC staff. She is survived by her children: John (Patricia) of Winsted, CT; David (Sharron) of Grand Rapids; Richard of Tucson, AZ; and Edith (Robert Christie) of Chelsea. She also leaves one sister, Betty Nolan of Prairie du Chien, WI, as well as seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. Her husband, Jerry, died in 2003. Her beloved step-mother, Stasia Swingle, died in 2004. At her request, her body has been donated to the University of Michigan Medical School. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, or to the Heritage Foundation of the United Methodist Retirement Communities.
