Charles J. Popovich

Age 80 passed away at his home surrounded by his family on March 24, 2008. He was son of Charles Sr. and Mary (Bogdanyi) born on November 23, 1927 in Chelsea, Michigan. Charles was known has a hard worker and never missed a day of work in his life. Charles was also a loving father and a wonderful grandfather. He was known to have a great wit and a wonderful sense of humor that brought great joy to anyone he was around. His strength and courage was unmatched during his 15 year fight with cancer as was his unwavering faith. The family would like to thank Dr. Kenneth Pienta for his dedication, humor and knowledge in treating cancer patients. Charles is survived by his children Joanne (Randy) Fink of Whitmore Lake, David (Dovie) Popovich of Clinton Karen (ex son-in-law Dan) Rosentreter of Ann Arbor, and Donna (Dana) Jones of Dexter as well as 11 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Also surviving are his sister Tootsie (AJ) Hale of Chelsea, sister Mary Jane Spikeberg of WI and sister-in-law Lynn Popovich, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother John Popovich. Funeral services will be Friday, March 28, 2008 from the Staffan-Mitchell funeral home at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Fortunato Turati officiating. A private burial will take place at a latter date. Expressions of sympathy may be made to The U of M Cancer center care of Dr. Pienta.

The Rev. Robert MacDonald

Age 88, passed away at the Chelsea Retirement Community, Towsley Village on March 24, 2008. He was born the son of Alexander and Florence (Martin) on July 5, 1919 in Detroit, MI. A veteran of World War II, Robert served in the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater. Following the war he graduated from the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria. He served many Episcopal Churches in his career as a Priest including St. Peters’ in Detroit, St. Johns’ in Holly, St. Pauls’ in Detroit, St. James’ in Dexter, and Trinity in Belleville before retiring from St. Thomas’ in Detroit. Robert was loved for his sense of humor. He never let a day go by without learning something new to improve himself, sharing his experience to help others enrich their lives. He loved nature, and enjoyed camping, sailing and hiking with his family, especially in Michigan. He is survived by his children Ann and (David Woodburn) MacDonald of Cincinnati, OH, Andrew (Yvonne) MacDonald of Cincinnati, OH, and Stephen MacDonald of Toledo, OH, and his three grandchildren, Maura and Kelsey MacDonald, and Alexa Woodburn. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Salem, of Royal Oak, MI (currently living in Cincinnati, OH). Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel, and his brother Douglas. A celebration of his life will take place at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 N. Military, Dearborn, on March 29, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. with Bishop Wendell Gibbs, Jr. and Rev. Daniel S. Geraldine M. Rushing
Of Chelsea, Michigan.

Age 87 passed away Friday March 21, 2008 at her home. She was born on April 9, 1920 in Lewis County Missouri, the daughter of Lloyd and Rhoda (Brumbraugh) Clickner. Gerry had lived in the area since 1988 coming from Ann Arbor. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, embroidering work, gardening, and bingo. For 15 years she owned and operated Gerry Rushing Temporary Help in Ann Arbor retiring in 1982. Surviving are two children, Kara (Donald) Crenshaw of Dexter, and Rhoda Sue (Mitchell) Zink of Chelsea. Three grandchildren, Samantha Dey Armond, Eric Zink and Trever Zink. Six great grandchildren, Joey, Alex, Nicholas, Skylyr, Hailey, and Mykaela. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Wanda J. Vogel, three husbands, William Vogel, Thomas Rushing, and Winston ’Frenchy’Arnot. Funeral services will be Tuesday March 25, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea. Warren C. Biehn
Of Unadilla Township.

Age 86, passed away Saturday night March 22, 2008 at Faith Haven Senior Care Center in Jackson. He was born on July 14, 1921 in Redford , Michigan the son of Elmer and Amelia (Wagner) Biehn. He was a heavy equipment operator in the gravel business for many years. Warren was a veteran in the United States Army serving in World War II . Favorite pastimes were tinkering with engines, fishing, farming, and spending time with his friends and family. In 1947 he married Irene L. Cowan in Munith and she survives, also surviving are Six children, Linda Drake of Stockbridge, Dan Biehn of Gregory, Donna (Phillip) Tanner of Gregory, Diane (Roy) Johnson of Gregory Jake (Christine) Biehn, of Stockbridge, and Penny (Tab) Moffat of Gregory, 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother Maurice Biehn and one sister Dorothy Brooks, and two infant grandchildren and one infant great grandchild. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. at the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stockbridge with Jerry Gould officiating. Burial will follow at Unadilla Fairview Cemetery. Martin J. Merkel of Chelsea, Mi.
Age 85, passed away Thursday March 20, 2008 at his home, surrounded by family. Martin was born on August 5, 1922 in Chelsea, Michigan, the son of Henry and Rose (Lucht) Merkel. He was a life long member of the Chelsea community and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He also helped start the Knights of Columbus order in Dexter. Martin graduated from Chelsea High School in 1939. On March 2, 1957, he married Anna Marie Heller and she survives. Also surviving are two children, Angeline (Robert Egan) Merkel of Ann Arbor, and David Merkel of Dexter. Two grandchildren, who will miss their loving ’Opa’, Eva and Max. One sister Grace (Phil) Goodrich of AZ., and one sister-in-law Mary Merkel of Ypsilanti. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Henry Merkel and one sister Angeline Merkel.
Anyone who knew Martin knew that he loved life and lived it to the fullest. He found special pleasure in spending time with his family at home and at their lake house in Northern Michigan. He was an accomplished big game hunter and truly loved nature. He was always very conscious of wildlife and environmental causes and took pride in the beautiful land on which he and Ann have lived. Together with his wife Ann, he owned and operated an oil exploration company and land development business. This month, they celebrated 51 years of marriage. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 24, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. from St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev F. Joseph Rinaldo and Rev Fr. Pauline ’Peg’Jean Poertner

Age 81 passed away at the Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor on March 14, 2008. She was born the daughter of Roy H. and Cecelia (Gauthier) Steffens on September 15, 1926 in Traverse City Michigan. On August 7, 1947 she married Maynard G. Poertner and he preceded her in death. Peg was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church where she was also a member of the altar society. Peg was an Avid bowler and became a life member of the Woman’s International Bowling Congress, and past president of the Ann Arbor Bowling Association. She also was known to golf, play softball, and loved to fish at the family cottage up north. In her younger days she worked at he Chelsea Drug Store and also for Lyndon Color Labs. Peg is survived by her children Larry Poertner of Grass Lake, Karen (Ken) Reinhardt of Gregory, Jim (Lynda) Poertner of New Port Richey, FL, Pat (Skip) Hicks of Hazelgreen, AL, and Dale Poertner of Ann Arbor. Also surviving are her grandchildren Mike and Matt Steinaway, Crystal and Courtney Poertner as well as great-grandchildren Kenny, Megean, and Taylor Steinaway; and one sister Dorothy (Frank) Gauthier. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. from St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Dr. William J. Turner officiating. Age 41 passed away at home on March 13, 2008. He was born the child of Roland and Freda (Hall) Heim on August 24, 1966 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. John was a graduate of Chelsea High school and known by his family and friends as a very hard worker that loved farming and always put the needs of others first before his own. In addition to his parents, John is survived by his aunt Bernice (Robert Engel of Pinckney, uncle Austin (Betty) Hall of CO, Ray S. Hall of Coolville, OH and Fred E. Hall of WV. John was preceded in death by his uncle Vincient Heim and his grandparents Louis and Ann Heim as well as Austin and Viola Hall. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. from the Staffan-Mitchell-funeral home with the Rev Fr. David Harvey officiating. Jeffrey C. Patterson of Grass Lake, MI

Age 36, passed away unexpectedly while on business in Hartford, Connecticut. He was born the son of Christine Jeffries and James A. Patterson on November 12, 1971 in Ann Arbor, and they both survive him. On October 19, 2002 in LasVegas, NV he married Cherie Alexander, and she survives. Jeff was full of life and loved every minute of it. He was a very hard worker and always aimed to be the best. Jeff was a big time Michigan football fan and also loved the Detroit Redwings. He was great with kids, especially with his nieces and nephews. Most of all though, he loved his family, his wife, Cherie, and his four daughters. Jeff will be missed dearly by his family and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by his daughters Samantha and April Bogdanski,of Grass Lake, and Alyssa and Alexus Pace-Patterson, of Ann Arbor. Also surviving are his brothers Phil (Melissa) Patterson, of Redford, Drew Patterson, of Orange County, CA, as well as step-brother Dylan Patterson, of Bay City. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews, Jacob, Grace and Luke, as well as his grandmother, Thelma (Pat) Maxium Patterson, Uncle Fred and Penny Patterson, of Columbus, OH and Uncles Danny and Mike Jeffries along with his step-mother, Beth Patterson, of Bay City and step-father, John Dunkley, of Grass Lake. Jeff was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John and Wanda Jeffries, of Ann Arbor, as well as his paternal grandfather, Fredrick C. Patterson, and Aunt Linda Jeffries. Funeral services will be Monday, March 17, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home with Pastor Gunnar Carlson officiating. Joan Elizabeth Pollard (Evans), of Ann Arbor, loving mother, grandmother and wife passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on March 11, 2008. Joan was preceded in death by her husband John C. Pollard, MD, her parents Elizabeth and William Evans, and brothers, Arthur, Richard, Eric and Freddie. She is survived by her sister and best friend Nora Holt, her children Robin (Ginger) Pollard, Alison (Joe Tinsley), and Philip (Lucy Malloy) her grandchildren, Stephanie, Elizabeth, Alexandra, Kathryn, Emma, Philip, Nicolle and Nicholas and one great granddaughter, Rylee. Joan was born February 24, 1921 in Bournemouth, England. Joan and John moved to the United States in 1957, eventually landing in Ann Arbor. After her husband’s death, Joan turned to her love of books working first at Waldenbooks and then the original Borders for many years. She retired at the age of 72 and moved to Chelsea, Michigan. Joan was an extremely strong and resilient woman; she continued to enjoy life well into her senior years, including a weeklong hike on the southwest English coastal pathway when she was 65. She was an avid environmentalist, supporting Greenpeace, Nature Conservancy and other environmental causes. She spent many vacations with her family and grandchildren in England and Northern Michigan. For the last five years of her life, Joan was lovingly cared for by her son, Philip, and Lucy at their home. The family would like to thank the staff at the Area Agency on Aging 1B for their wonderful support services over the years and the staff at Joseph’s Mercy Hospital Hospice for their services over the last year. Arthur O. Maschke

Age 84, passed away Wednesday morning March 12, 2008 at his home. He was born on October 25, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan the son of Gustav and Marie (Weiss) Maschke. Art had lived in the area since he was an infant. He was Herdsman at Siebert Farms, clerk at Howell Co-op, and clerk at the Gregory elevator for several years. He was a rural letter carrier in Gregory for 20 years, and a member and former elder of the Unadilla Presbyterian Church. Most of all he loved is family, neighbors and farming. On November 17, 1945 he married Dorothe L. Clark in Howell and she survives, also surviving are three children, Clarke Maschke, Bev Owens and Marcia (Scott Hinton) Maschke all of Gregory, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. One sister Helga Ranck of GA., and one sister in law Vivian Maschke of Burton, MI. He was preceded in death by two brothers Gus and Albert Maschke and one sister Martha Bauman. Funeral services will be Friday March 14, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stockbridge. Burial will follow at Pinckney Cemetery. Of Leslie, born in Milan, Michigan on June 9, 1936 to Earl and Ellen (Mead) Rowe Sr. passed away on March 8, 2008 at age 71. Carolyn leaves four children; Cherie (Jamie) Batdorff of Munith, MI, Barbara (Terry) Baldwin of Pleasant Lake, MI, Becky (Mark) Duncan of Alapaha, GA, and Michael (Shannon) Snay of Leslie, MI; a sister, Barbara (Neal) Collins of Milan, MI; a brother, Earl (Nora) Rowe Jr. of Leslie, MI; 19 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.; and special friends Glenn and Margaret Hayes of Apache Junction, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, an infant son, two brothers; Dean (Judy) Rowe formerly of Ann Arbor, and Dale (Jeanette Everett) Rowe formerly of Stockbridge, granddaughters; Kathryn Merkel and Brandy Baldwin, and great granddaughter Morgan McKimmy. Carolyn retired from Thetford Corporation in Dexter, Michigan in 1999 after 30 years of service. She could create beauty with her green thumbs, enjoyed bird-watching, and belonged to Stockbridge Senior Citizens. She always had an open door for those she loved. After defeating breast cancer in 1998 she became a strong role model for all who knew her. She is greatly missed and will be forever cherished in our hearts. Lillian K. Fujihira

Formerly of Ann Arbor

Age 89, passed away at the Chelsea Retirement Community, Towsley Village on March 6, 2008. She was born October 11, 1918 in Seattle, Washington, the daughter of Yoshitaro and Yukiko Fujihira. Lillian had been a resident at the Chelsea Retirement Community for the past 11 years, moving from Ann Arbor, where she had lived for over 45 years. Lillian was raised in Seattle, Washington. She graduated from the University of Washington with a Liberal Arts degree. Lillian held several positions in Seattle, New York and Chicago before settling in as an Administrative Assistant for the University of Michigan for 32 years, retiring in 1982. She was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Ann Arbor. Traveling was a love for Lillian as she made numerous trips to the Holy Land with church members. Another passion for Lillian was spending time with friends and dining out in restaurants in Ann Arbor.

Lillian is survived by her niece and nephews: Janet Okada-Coakley of Massachusetts, Richard Okada of Minnesota, and David Okada of Wisconsin. A memorial service will be held at the Chelsea Retirement Community, Towsley Village Chapel on Thursday, March 27th at 2:00pm. Wanda Lee Reynolds
Of Stockbridge, Michigan.


Passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2008 in Jackson, Michigan. She was born in Prestonsburg, Kentucky the daughter of Claude and Opal (Risner) Sturgill. Wanda had lived in the area since the 1950’s and was a member of the Stockbridge United Methodist Church. Quilting, crafts, cooking and teaching her son how to play baseball were her favorite pastimes. She also was a member of the Eastern Star Rebecca Lodge 143 of Okemos. On February 29, 1960, she married Robert L. Reynolds in Stockbridge, and he survives. Also surviving are three children, Sandra (Doug) Krum of Dansville, Susan (Velton JR) Stephens of Munith, and Randy (Missi) Reynolds of Jackson; five grandchildren in which she cherished are Courtney (Kevin) Floyd, Tara and Samantha Stephens, and Kaylee and Lainey Reynolds; brothers and sisters, Juanita Heeney of Stockbridge, Bill Sturgill of Leslie, Wilma (Henry) Wireman of Stockbridge, Eunice (Tom) Sorenson of Jackson, Jack (Sue) Sturgill of Jackson, Mack Sturgill of Coldwater, David (Vicie) Sturgill of South Carolina and Danny Sturgill of New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Yvonne Sturgill and one brother-in-law William Heeney Sr. and her father-in-law and mother-in-law Donald and Bessie Reynolds. Alger Bollinger

Age 90, passed away February 29, 2008 at his home surrounded by his wife and daughters who mourn his loss. He was born September 18, 1917 in Gregory, MI the son of Carl Frederic and Ruth (Worden) Bollinger. He spent his entire life in the Gregory area. In 1942 he married Jane King and they had 64 years of marriage together. He was a friend to everyone he met and was always available to them when a need arose. Surviving is his wife, Jane; their children Joel B. (Randy) Pouwels; Patricia Gayle (Raymond) Cole and their only son, Carl Frederic. Also surviving are their grandchildren, Elanor R. Phillips; Michael & Craig Cole; great grandchildren, Caitlin & Chelsea Cole and nephew Jeff Lutz as well as many cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister Kathryn. Carl Frederic Bollinger II
Of Gregory, MI

Age 58, passed away March 2, 2008 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Rowe Memorial Hospital in Stockbridge, MI. on August 13, 1949 the youngest child and only son of Alger and Jane (King) Bollinger. After graduation from Fowlerville High School, he attended Kalamazoo College where he received a degree in Religion and Philosophy. Later he received an advanced degree in Library Science from Western Michigan. In 1983 he moved to California where he served as a supervisor for six years at the Pomona City Library. When illness forced retirement, he returned to Michigan. He lived in an apartment in East Lansing until he was unable to live alone. Funeral services will be Thursday March 6, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home in Stockbridge with Rev. Judy Darling officiating. Ruth Tisch of Jackson, MI

Age 90 passed away at the Vista Grand Villa in Jackson, Michigan on March 1, 2008. She was born the daughter of George and Bertha (Cook) Bareis on March 1, 1918. In September of 1939 she married Wilber E. Tisch and he preceded her in death in 1993. Ruth loved nature, and was a wonderful gardener. She helped manage the farm on Territorial Road. She was known as a kind woman and a person that loved her faith and family most of all. Ruth is survived by her two daughters Leona M. Tisch of Grand Rapids and Betty (Dale) Ackley of Jackson; grand daughter Dawn (Cameron) Goulding of Leonard, MI and one great grand daughter Althea Rose Goulding as well as many nieces, and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Caskey-Mitchell funeral home with Rev. Lillian French officiating.
