E. Kathleen Abbey

Age 84, passed away September 29, 2008 at Allegiance Health Care Systems in Jackson, MI. She was born October 4, 1923 the daughter of Edward and Emma (Byrnes) Oakes in Stanford, Kentucky. She moved from Kentucky to the area in 1946 and worked for Munith Products for over 30 years, retiring in 2006. Kathleen enjoyed playing Chinese checkers; playing cards, especially euchre; singing and she loved her grandchildren. Kathleen is survived by her son, Edward D. (Bonnie) Abbey of Munith, MI; three grandchildren Cristina (Nova) Lindow, Melissa (Ian) McClure, and Edward Abbey. One sister Nancy Carey of Kentucky. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Charles and John Oakes and 2 sisters, Dorothy Thompson and Genevieve Price. Funeral services will be Thursday October 2, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home in Stockbridge with Rev. Robert Castle of the Jeruel Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Waterloo Twp. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Jeruel Baptist Church.
Margaret Grace Swanson
Of Chelsea, MI
Formerly of Modesto, CA

Age 74 passed away at the Chelsea Community Hospital on September 26, 2008. She was born the daughter of William W. and Mary L. (Finley) Swanson on July 9, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in Chicago while her father was a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago. Maggie was a creative person who enjoyed painting and writing children’s books. Her greatest joy was sharing her creativity with others. She collaborated with other artists in creating murals at Our Savior Lutheran Church and at the Cardiopulmonary Department at Chelsea Community Hospital. Maggie raised her family in Modesto, California where she had a number of valued and loving friends, always making friends easily. She was a member of Omega Nu Sorority and Stanislaus County Medical Society Alliance, actively involved in fund raising activities. She was a loving mother and grandmother with a kind heart and a good soul that will be greatly missed. Margaret is survived by her brother Robert (Virginia) Swanson of Appleton, WI. and children William (Wendy Wahl) Lee of Chelsea, Elizabeth Carella of CA and David (Marianne) Lee of CA. Also surviving are her grandchildren Kathryn and Zachary Lee, Gianluca, Michael and Matteo Carella, as well as Brian and Jason Lee. A Memorial Service at Our Savior Lutheran Church will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Dale Grimm officiating. Donald G. Hafner
Of Chelsea

Age 83, passed away at his home on Thursday, September 25, 2008. He was born on August 7, 1925 in Chelsea, Michigan the son of George and Catherine (Arrowsmith) Hafner. On May 17, 1947 he married Catherine E. Beranek in Angola, Indiana, and she survives him. Also surviving are two daughters Janet (John) Norris and Linda (Don) Parker, all of Chelsea; also four grandchildren, Stacy Norris, Stephanie (Brent) Bell, and Nicholas and Travis Parker; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Griffin, and Gavin; also one sister, Gladys Finkbeiner, and one brother Ed (Joanne) Hafner. He was preceded in death by one son in 1973, Donald H. Hafner, three brothers, Francis, Vincent, Charles Hafner, and one sister, Dorothy Grammatico. Donald attended Chelsea Schools. He served in the United States Army during World War II, and worked as a shipping clerk for Rockwell International, retiring after more than 30 years of service. He also served on the Chelsea Fire Department many years. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church as well as the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed camping, traveling to Florida, swimming, and spending time with his family, especially his grandkids and great-grandkids. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, September 29, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Dr. William J. Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home on Sunday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church.

Larry E. Byrne
Of Manchester, Michigan

Age 58, died September 23, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born January 16, 1950 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of Joseph E. and Mary (Garrity) Byrne. On May 21, 1994 he married Kimberly L. Johnson, and she survives. Larry proudly served two tours of duty in Vietnam with the United States Marine Corps after enlisting with his brother, M.D. Byrne. He enjoyed spending time at the coffee shop with his friends, playing softball and Black Jack. He was a member of the Manchester American Legion Post 117 and the Manchester VFW Post 10329. Larry was one of 11 children and never forgot where he came from. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Jennifer (Craig) Pajak of Troy, Ryan (Jessica) Byrne of Novi, Marine LCpl. Richard A-W. (Rachel) Scott of Manchester, and Amanda (Craig) Taylor of Manchester. He is also survived by nine siblings, Barb (Bob) Lucas, Joseph Byrne, Patricia (Earl) Albertson, Michael D. Byrne, David (Gladys) Byrne, Danny Byrne, Dennis (Joyce) Byrne, Jon Byrne, all of Indianapolis, and Stephanie (James) Prine of Arkansas, his four grandchildren, Joshua Pajak, Alyssa Pajak, Abaigael Byrne, and Cash Taylor, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Andrew Vogel, and brother, Shannon Byrne. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church in Chelsea with Fr. Bob McGrath officiating. The family will receive friends at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Vigil service at 7:30 p.m. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made by bringing a new toy or a cash donation for Marine Corps Toys-for-Tots. Lori Anne Trotter

Age 43, died in her home Friday, September 19, 2008 surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Arbor Hospice. Lori is survived by the love of her life, her husband and angel, Richard Trotter and her three devoted children, Trevor and Nicholas Jenks and Sara Lewis as well as two step-children, Reanna and Ryan Trotter. She is also survived by her father, Russell Adams; grandparents, Wilford and Thelma Adams; five siblings, Terry Reed (Travis), Daniel Adams (Teresa), Scott Adams, Dawn Snyder (Jim), and Timothy Adams (Stephanie) as well as her faithful Aunt Linda and Uncle Tim Snyder and many loyal friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Carol Sullivan, and a sister, Sandy Adams. Lori was an avid quilt-maker, gifted chef, and thoughtful mother and companion. The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea, Michigan on Monday, September 22, 2008. Lee Curtis Haynes
Of Dexter, Township.

Age 67, passed away Tuesday September 16, 2008 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was born on May 8, 1941 in Dearborn, Michigan the son of Lee and Louella (Stamp) Haynes. Curt had lived in the area for the past 36 years and retired from Ford Motor Company in 1987. He enjoyed his computer, classical music, reading, and he and his wife Nancy L. Taylor built a house in which they lived in for 15 years. In addition to his wife of 44 years, he is also survived by his mother of Dearborn, two daughters, Beckie (Richard) Ferrett of Belleville, and Lisa Haynes of Memphis TN, two sisters, Bonnie (Ron) Cline of California, and Sharon Dugan of Dearborn. Several nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father. Funeral services will be Friday September 19, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. from the Staffan-Mitchell, Chelsea where friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Larry Niel Mills

Age 73 passed way at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans on September 14, 2008. He was born the son of Niel and Alta M. (Dewey) Mills on November 27, 1934 in Stockbridge, Michigan. Larry loved Farming, tractors, and going to Plow Days watching the horses. He also enjoyed camping with his family and watching his grandchildren’s activities. Larry is survived by his children Shari (Bill) Love of Leslie, Richard (Allison) Mills of Jackson, Nanci Mills of Ocala, FL, John (Michelle) Mills of North pole, AK, Tracey Mills of Leslie and Eric (Lori) Mills of Kincheloe, MI , along with seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also surviving are two brothers and one sister Frederick (Vonetta) Mills of Chelsea, Lorraine (Jim) Massey of Pickney, Douglas (Evalou) Mills of Stockbridge and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Hal Jankusky officiating. Gertrude Molter Drouyor

Gertrude Molter Drouyor, 95, of Ann Arbor, passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2008. She was three weeks shy of her 96th birthday. She was born Gertrude Victoria Molter, October 3, 1912 in Pontiac MI to Leonard Nicholas and Helena Caroline Schoner Molter. She was the last survivor of their eleven children. Her husband Wendell Phillips Drouyor also predeceased her.
Gertrude graduated from Clarkston (MI) High School, then earned a bachelors degree from Michigan State Normal College (Eastern Michigan University) and Cleary College. ’Mrs. Drouyor’ will be remembered as a role model by many young girls as a nine-year Brownie and Girl Scout leader of Troop 3 at St. Thomas School and as a 4-H leader. She also volunteered on the citywide and district levels of Girl Scouting, and the Ann Arbor Community Chest which later became the United Way. She was a bookkeeper and administrative secretary, retiring from the Bentley Library, Michigan Historical Collections at the University of Michigan. In addition to these roles, she assisted with the activities of the Friends of the Michigan Historical Collections. In her retirement she volunteered for the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and various organizations and ministries at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea including the Parish Council.
She is survived by her daughter, Martha Lenore DeCamp and son-in-law Samuel Tolken DeCamp; grandsons, Ralph Charles Belknap and John Phillip Belknap and granddaughter-in-law Kelly Evans Belknap. Arrangements are being handled by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, 901 North Main Street, Chelsea MI. Visitation will be Sunday, September 14 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with the rosary being recited at 7:30. The funeral mass will be Celebrated Monday, September 15, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation preceding at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Dr. William J. Turner officiating. Burial will follow the luncheon in St. Joseph Cemetery in Dexter. In lieu of flowers, Gertrude has requested that donations be made to the Drouyor Philanthropic Award which she endowed through the Alpha Sigma Tau National Sorority Foundation, 1929 Canyon Road, Birmingham AL, 35216 to reward college women for leadership in volunteer and philanthropic service; or to St. Mary Catholic Church of Chelsea to the Gertrude Drouyor fund for use and care of the Eagle Scout Peace Gardens at the church. Gertrude was always grateful for the loving care given so freely by all of the staff at Hillside Terrace Retirement Community, 1939 Jackson Ave, Ann Arbor. Her family takes this opportunity to also thank the owners and the staff.

Robert P. Callan Sr.
Of Chelsea, Mi.

Died at home, surrounded by his beloved family on September 9, 2008, at the age of 68. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Margaret Mauceri Callan; their 13 children: Dr. Margaret (Dr. Jonathan) Lane of Chelsea; Peter Callan of New Jersey; Kristen (Kenneth) Ritson of New Jersey; Tara (Joseph) Kerr of Kansas; Kelley (Matthew) Moleski of New Jersey; Katie Callan of New York; Monica Callan of Ireland; Robert P. Callan, Jr. of Connecticut; Anthony Callan of New Jersey; Shana Callan of Chelsea; Christopher Callan of Pennsylvania; Michael Callan of Chelsea; and Mary Callan of Kansas; and 20 grandchildren. He is the son of Anne (Moran) Callan of Queens Village, New York and the late Peter Oliver Callan. He is also survived by his sisters, Margaret (William) Devlin of New York and Anne (John) Connaughton of Connecticut, and many nieces and nephews. He loved grocery shopping, cooking and Fox News political coverage. His wife was the great love of his life and their family was his entire world. Santa Mary Algeo passed away peacefully, on September 7, 2008. She was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, December, 1913, the daughter of Joseph LoFaso and Veronica Cascio. In June 1937, she married James W. Algeo, in Oak Park, Illinois. They were married 68 years, until his death in January, 2006. They lived in Oconomowoc, WI, Bloomington MN, and after her husband’s retirement in 1976, they divided their time between Scottsdale, AZ, and Namakan Lake, Ontario, Canada. Since her husband’s death, Santa has been with her daughter in Ann Arbor and Chelsea, MI. Santa was a loving wife and mother, and her vocation in life was in making a home for her husband and children. She had four children: Santa Traugott (Michael) of Ann Arbor, MI; James M. Algeo of Bloomington, MN ; Susan Kirk (Charles) of Albuquerque, NM, and Katherine Seeley, who died in 1953, and whom she never ceased to mourn. In addition to her children, she is survived by her grandchildren, Elisabeth Traugott (James Rickett); Christopher Traugott, Susan Fellers, Erik Lough, Theresa Bright (Jason), and Kathryn Algeo. She was also blessed with four great grandchildren, Lila and Francesca Rickett, and Amaru Cobb and Maden Bright. Her parents and six brothers and sisters predeceased her, and she is survived, in addition to her children, by nieces and nephews in New Orleans, LA., and Hattiesburg, MS, as well as by her beloved poodle, Bon-Bon, and her later life companion and friend, Reme Tillman. She met life’s joys and adversities with dignity and courage. She was the kindest of women, adored by her husband, and loved by all those who came to know her. Services for her are pending, and will be held in Oconomowoc, WI at the Schmidt-Barteldt Funeral Home, with internment to follow in St. Jerome’s Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea, MI and Schmidt-Barteldt Funeral Home in Oconomowoc. Jack D. Montgomery
of Gregory, MI

Age 88 passed away at his home surrounded by his family on September 2, 2008. He was born the son of John and Etta Pearl (Kent) on June 20, 1920 in Detroit, Michigan. On March 14, 1997 he married Patricia E. Hillard in Chelsea, MI and she survives. Jack was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and husband. He enjoyed fishing, boating and navigating via astrological charts. He was very proud of his tractor and loved his time in his workshops, working on his antique cars. In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by his daughter Michele A. Berry of Gregory, his grandchildren Susan Kowzlan, James Cantley, Noria Mowrer, Anna Engle Rachel Engle, Caleb Engle and Robert Mentzler as well as great grandchildren Jacob and Michael Cantley and many nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Montomery in 1993, daughter Sandra Kay Montgomery Cantley, as well as his brother George Montgomery and his sister Ruby Bremer. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 6, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. from the Staffan-Mitchell funeral home with Pastor Larry Lyons officiating. David A. Ball

Age 83, died Saturday, August 30, 2008 in Denver, North Carolina. He was born January 23, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Joseph A. and Rose M. (Zink) Ball. David worked for Ford Motor Company as an assembler. He married Dorothy M. Ondish, who preceded him in death. David had lived in the Chelsea area until 1984 when he moved to North Carolina. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He is survived by his children, David Ball of Maryland and Jeff Ball of Florida, step-daughter Darlene Moffat, and two more step-children. David is also survived by his sister, Mary Schiller of Chelsea, his brother Thomas Ball of Florida, three sisters-in-law, Stella Ball of Novi, Sandra Ball of Grass Lake, and Margaret Ball of Dexter, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Dorothy he was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Edward Ball, Duffield Ball, Robert Ball, and Richard Ball, and sisters Alberta Slane, Dorothy Hunawill, Rose Ann Gimmey. Funeral services will be Monday, September 8, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Shaneyfelt officiating.
