Esther Abate


Esther Abate, age 91, died on July 23, 2010, in the loving embrace of family and friends. Esther was born June 17, 1919, to Earl and Edna Church, in Washington D.C. Esther was the beloved wife of Vito Abate (deceased), the beloved mother of Bruce Whitman (Marlene), grandmother of Bentley (Kristy), Austin (Theresa), and Jason, and great-grandmother of Abigail, Conrad, Lily, and Taylor. She is survived by her brother David Church (Winona) and her sister Alma Jean Thornley (Philip), and was pre-deceased by her brother Gerald Church (Joanne) and sister Verna Zeeff (Roger). She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. Esther’s vocation and avocation were centered on art. Esther taught art for 35 years in Wyandotte, Michigan. After retirement, she continued teaching at the Friends School in Detroit and in other informal settings. Besides having a passion for teaching art, Esther was a prolific painter, whose paintings grace the homes of family members and locations that were significant to her. Esther had a remarkable ability to be curious and learn--- painting new pictures, learning computer techniques, trying new health methods, and gaining spiritual insights---until the end of her life. She will be dearly missed. A memorial service for Esther will be held on Saturday, August 21, 3pm, at the Friends Meeting House, 1420 Hill St., Ann Arbor, Michigan. Florence Jane Kunzelman


Florence Jane Kunzelman of Elkhart, Indiana formerly of Munith, MI, age 91, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2010 in Elkhart, IN. She was born on May 1, 1919 in Gregory, Michigan the daughter of Roy and Nellie (Nagley) Johnson. She was a hard working farmer’s wife with eight children and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, baking, and all kinds of flowers. She had worked for the D and C Stores in the warehouse, retiring in 1981. Surviving are seven children: Paul (Jean) Kellenberger of Munith, Roy "Henry" (Frances) Kellenberger of Jackson, Max Kellenberger of Texas, Ann Kellenberger of Michigan Center, Lynn (Leo) Cribley of Dansville, Dale (Sue) Kellenberger of Munith, and Bonnie (Bruce) Russell of Bristol, IN; one step-daughter, Pamela (Richard) Burton of Rives Junction; one daughter-in-law, Linda Kellenberger of Jonesville; 29 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren; also her special and dear friend, Carol Daum. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Max Kellenberger; her second husband, Dwight Kunzelman; one son, Dick Kellenberger; and two step-sons, Dwight Kunzelman Jr. and Kenny Kunzelman. Jillian L. Drow


Jillian Lea Drow of Chelsea, MI, age 21, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2010 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She was born May 31, 1989 in California, the daughter of Mark and Debra (Michael) Drow. Jillian had lived in the area for the past 19 years, coming from San Francisco and was confirmed at the First United Methodist Church of Chelsea. Jillian had completed her Junior year at the University of Michigan where she had a scholarship for Diving and was pursuing a degree in Environmental Science. She had graduated from Chelsea High School in 2007 with Honors where she was the Captain of the Diving Team and was a two-year All State recipient for diving. Jillian was an outdoor girl, loved sailing, and was very competitive. She was on the U of M Cycling Team and worked at Aberdeen Bike Shop in Chelsea. She liked to mountain bike the Potawatomi Trail every week and enjoyed snowboarding, as well. Surviving are her parents of Chelsea; two sisters, Anna E. Drow of Lexington, KY and Alaina M. Drow of Chelsea; aunts and uncles, Daniel (Sandy) Michael of Virginia, Jay (Baba) Drow of Ann Arbor, Lynn (Steve Enzer) Okenka of Brooklyn, and Leslie (Tom) Brown of Jerome, MI; maternal grandparents, John (Shirley) Michael of Chelsea; and paternal grandmother, Esther Drow of Brooklyn. She is also survived by her special friends, Margy Brill, Amanda McKenzie, and Elizabeth Gunden. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Harvey Drow. Margaret D. Emswiler


Margaret Dixon Emswiler of Chelsea, MI, age 90, passed away Sunday, July 11, 2010 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. She was born February 7, 1920 in Ann Arbor, the daughter of John E. and Cecil (Dixon) Emswiler. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) in Special Education with a double major in Orthopedics and Vision and her Master’s Degree in Administration and Hearing from the University of Michigan. Margaret was involved in Special Education and programs for Exceptional Children her entire life. She spent time at Michigan School for the Blind, Sturgis, MI, Ft. Worth, TX, Austin, TX, Louisiana Tech, and Kansas City. For many years she was involved with the Head Start Program for Region 7 (including Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas). Upon retirement she moved back to Michigan to be nearer to her sister’s families and moved into Silver Maples where she was elected the first President of the Resident Council, which she served for two years, followed by being on the Resident Council for two more years. Surviving are her nieces and nephew, Arden (Carolyne) Smith of Grand Ledge, Maggie (Ramon) Rodriguez of Lansing, and Cassandra Emswiler of Dallas, TX; many great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, and one great-great-great-nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Elizabeth Ann (Emswiler) Smith and John Dixon Emswiler; and a niece, Shirley Jayne Bousum. Russ Armstrong


Arthur M. “Russ” Armstrong of Chelsea, MI, age 60, passed away Friday, July 16, 2010. He was born on March 4, 1950 in Washington, D.C., the son of Arthur M. and Mary (Hetherton) Armstrong. Russ met Suzanne M. (Dziurgot) Armstrong on May 2, 1978 on a blind date and they married on May 15, 1982 in Dexter, MI and she survives. Russ was a Realtor for Edward Surovell Realtors and prior to that was the founder of Wherehouse Records in Ypsilanti, MI. He loved boating on his 1979 Mastercraft, scuba diving, music, golf and sports, especially U of M Football and Tigers Baseball. He also enjoyed reading the news, had a very good memory, and an incredible sense of humor. Russ enjoyed entertaining and was extremely generous. Most of all he loved to spend time with his family. In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, Rebecca (Joseph) Palmer of Ann Arbor and Nick Armstrong of Chelsea, and his best friend of 50 years, Dr. Bill Munslow. Jeffrey D. Bristle

Jeffrey D. Bristle of Manchester, MI, age 45, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at his home. He was born September 25, 1964 in Ann Arbor, the son of Jerry and Pamela (Davis) Bristle. Jeff had three farms and was very passionate about farming and his tractors. He was a loving family man and enjoyed spending time with his kids and family. Surviving are his children, Mitchell, Bradley, Marcy, Megan, Jordyn, Garrett, and Godson Gregory Bristle; his fiancĂ©e, Tara K. Webb of Manchester; his parents, Jerry (Pam) Bristle of Manchester; his brothers, Doug (Mary) Bristle of Fowlerville and Jon (Valerie) Bristle of Grass Lake; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, as well as Tara’s mother, Kay Webb. Timothy J. Graham

Timothy John Graham of Gregory, MI, age 61, passed away at the Chelsea Community Hospital on Saturday, July 10, 2010. He was born the son of Jack E. And Virginia V. (Janness) Graham on January 4, 1949 in Royal Oak, Michigan. On June 30, 1973, he married Carrie E. Mihalich and she survives. Tim loved the outdoors and enjoyed boating and snowmobiles. He enjoyed people and selling cotton candy to children. Most of all he loved his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Shannon (Victor) Sandecki of Stockbride, Stephen Graham and Matthew (Rachel Depottey) Graham, all of Gregory, as well as his grandchildren, Andrew, Evan, and Noah. Also surviving are his siblings, Michael (Vera) Graham and Penny (Joe) Marrocco, and many nieces and nephews as well as Carrie's parents, Dr. Stephen P. and Nina K. Mihalich, and sister-in-law Amy (Tod) Clark. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Pricilla Graham. Mildred A. Ackley


Mildred Alice Ackley of Jackson, formerly Stockbridge, MI, age 99, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010 at Vista Grand Villa in Jackson. She was born April 16, 1911 in Elmira, NY, the daughter of William and Zeda Sherman. Mildred had been a caretaker for many people in Stockbridge during her life, was a bus driver for Stockbridge Community Schools for 11 years, and was the oldest member of the Stockbridge Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Farm Bureau, Extension Club, and Happy Hustlers 4-H Club. She also loved to travel, wintering in Florida for many years in Zephyrhills. Surviving are three children, Norma Jean (Clifford) Johnson of Williamston, William (Tootie) Ackley of Chelsea, and Dale (Betty) Ackley of Jackson; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orla H. Ackley, and a daughter, Elaine M. Ackley. Funeral services will take place Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stockbridge with Pastor Paul Damkoehler officiating. Mae Fletcher


Mae Fletcher of Jackson formerly Stockbridge, MI, age 92, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at her home. She was born on August 23, 1917 in Royalton, KY, the daughter of Walter and Arizona Carpenter. Mae had lived in the area since 1940 and enjoyed sewing, gardening, word puzzles, and cooking. On April 12, 1935 she married Wheeler Fletcher and he preceded her in death in August 1993. Surviving are six children, Frank “George” (Carol) Fletcher of Stockbridge, Louise (Bob) Chaney of Stockbridge, Bonnie (and special friend Terry) Back of Michigan Center, Kathy “Pat” (Hugh) Roberts of Stockbridge, Charlett (Dan) Freeman of Jackson, and Perry “Pete” (Carol) Fletcher of Munith; one sister, Laura Lawrence of Holt; one brother, Richard (Anne) Carpenter of Florida; and one sister-in-law, Joyce Carpenter of Jackson. Also surviving are 26 grandchildren, including Lisa Fletcher (who was her grandmother’s caregiver); 58 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Willie (Jenny) Carpenter and Robert Carpenter; sister, Mary (Walter) Carpenter, and an infant sister, Martha Carpenter; one son, John “Johnny” Fletcher; one grandson, George Back; one great-grandson, Chad Roszczewski; and one great-granddaughter. John H. Lonskey


John Harold Lonskey of Grass Lake, MI, age 63, passed away July 5, 2010. He was born in Ypsilanti on Mother’s Day, May 13, 1947. Shortly after arriving in the world, he moved to Belleville. He graduated from Belleville HS in 1965. He graduated from Michigan Tech in 1969 with a Civil Engineer degree. He started working for MDOT in 1970 where he worked in several positions. He retired from MDOT in October 2002 with 33 years of service. He worked for 2 years after retirement for TBE Inc. as a consultant. After that he decided just to be retired and enjoy his hobbies of golf and motorcycling. He bowled for several years and bowled a 300 game at Stockbridge Lanes in 1982 (1 of 2 people at the time). He and Janet, both with their own motorcycles, enjoyed many trips. John was an active, lifetime member in AMA (American Motorcycle Association). In high school, he received 3 varsity letters at Belleville HS for swimming. He played a couple of years of football. While at Michigan Tech, he also earned 3 varsity letters in swimming. In his younger days, he had boats for waterskiing. He was in the Ford Lake Waterski club. He taught his children swimming and waterskiing. John married Janet Nightingale in December of 1984. John is survived by Janet, his two children, Connie Lonskey (and her two children Hailey and Deborah) and Christie Andersen (and her husband, Kris and granddaughter, Elexia); his brother Harold (Debbie); and a niece, Michelle and nephew, Matt. He also has two stepdaughters, Suzanne Garrett (Steve) and Laurie Piccione (Lou); and two grandchildren, Rachel and Alex. Virginia V. Matthews


Virginia Vera Matthews of Grass Lake, MI, age 75, passed away Monday, July 5, 2010 at her home. She was born on November 12, 1934 in Wyandotte, MI, the daughter of Ralph and Vera (Bennett) Peck. She had lived in the area since 1969, coming from New Boston. She loved games, especially Bingo and computer games, travel, and spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving are six children, Sharon Anteau of Monroe, Ralph Stewart of Grass Lake, Leona (Robert) Ingram of Ypsilanti, Rick Stewart of Jackson, Rodger (Anita) Stewart of Grass Lake, and Brenda (David) Smyth of Grass Lake; seven step-children, John (Mary) Matthews of Belleville, Ellen Smith of MN, Gale (Ken) James of MN, Laura (Jim) Linder of Ypsilanti, Scott Matthews of MN, Paula (Don Harris) Matthews of Chelsea, and Sally Adams of AZ; 15 grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ellen (Jerry) Mullen of Sparta. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold R. Stewart; her second husband, Howard J. Matthews; and one step-son, Gordon Matthews. Irvin L. Slane


Irvin Lee "Bud" Slane of Chelsea, MI, age 86, passed away Monday, July 5, 2010 at his home. He was born July 3, 1924 in Chelsea, the son of Charles and Orva (McKay) Slane. On June 8, 1946 he married Opal Carpenter in Napoleon, OH and she preceded him in death in 2004. Bud had lived in Chelsea his entire life except for the time he spent serving his country in the United States Navy in the 91st CB’s in the South Pacific, and was honorably discharged in 1945. Bud was an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 76 and liked gardening, Tinkering, playing the trumpet. He was a Chelsea semi-pro baseball pitcher for several years. He is survived by three children, Stephan (Renee) Slane, Richard (Shawn Spaulding) Slane, and Deborah K. (Roger) Hill, all of Chelsea; three grandchildren, Tara, Joel, and Phillip; three siblings, Charles Slane of New Jersey, Ted Slane of Wyoming, MI, and Rebecca (Don) Bush of Chelsea; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his siblings, Charles LaVerne, Stephen, Albert, Margaret, Eleanor, David, Mildred, and Mae. Evelyn B. Gregory


Evelyn B. Gregory of Gregory, MI, age 94, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2010 at her home. She was born on April 29, 1916 in Detroit, the daughter of Walter and Orlean (Kaiser) Brown. On June 12, 1937 she married Kenneth Gregory and he preceded her in death in 2002. Evelyn had lived in the area since 1969, coming from Detroit. She loved reading and watching movies. Surviving are two children, Sandy (Don) Johnston and Keith (Doreen) Grosshans, both of Gregory; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia D. Grosshans; one granddaughter, Katherine Johnston Hunt; one great-grandson, Steven Kalmbach; two great-great-grandchildren, Landon and Lillian Urie; and two siblings, Harry Brown and Alice Rissman. Donna M. Sherman


Donna Marie Sherman of Murphy, North Carolina, age 66, passed away at her home on Friday, July 2, 2010. Donna was born September 5, 1943 in Stockbridge, MI. She was a graduate of Chelsea High School, Class of 1961. Donna was the daughter of the late George W. Sherman and Grace Sherman Leach. Donna resided in San Francisco for several years, where she was employed by Macy’s as Assistant Shipping & Receiving Manager before relocating to Arcadia, Florida. In Arcadia she owned a grooming & miniature doll house business, Donna’s Pamper Parlour & Tough of Love of Miniatures. She moved to Murphy, N.C. in 1997 and was employed at Wal-Mart. Donna volunteered at Appalachian Heritage Crafters, a non-profit organization, and she served three terms as president. She was a life member of the Girls Scouts of America. Surviving is her partner of 20 years, Virginia Rechner, brother Donald Harris Sr. and his wife Beulah, four nieces and nephews, six great-nieces and nephews, her step-daughter Laura Kim Baraona, and granddaughters Dana Pearce, and Megan Underwood, and a great-granddaughter Cara Pearce. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, with visitation from 12:00 noon until the time of service. Lyle D. Markle


Lyle D. Markle of Henrietta Twp., age 81, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at his home. He was born on June 14, 1929 in West Branch, MI, the son of Leslie and Margaret (Hartwick) Markle. Lyle had lived in the area since 1969 and owned Markle’s Market in Munith, Markle’s Garage, and Lyle Markle’s Inc. (a paper warehousing/storing business) in Munith. He also hauled onions for Dixon Farms. On July 13, 1970 he married Shirley A. Riddell, and she survives. Also surviving are five children, Delton (Sue) Markle of N.C., John (Janice) Mulberry of Lexington, KY, Diana (Perry) Rickman of Rives Junction, Alan (Rhonda) Holbrook and Steve (Colleen) Holbrook, all of Grass Lake; 11 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 2, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stockbridge with Rev. Robert Castle officiating. David L. Lincoln

David L. Lincoln of Munith, MI, age 63, died Saturday, June 26, 2010. He was born on December 10, 1946 in Detroit MI, the son of James H. and Mary (Kimmerling) Lincoln. David had lived in the area since 1972 and was retired as a school teacher and was an avid outdoorsman. He was married to Barbara Elizabeth Anderson and is survived by her and his parents of Harbor Beach, MI; two sisters, Janet (David) Stoller Lincoln of Prescott, AZ and Linda (Randy) Olson Lincoln of Arvada, CO; and brother, Edward. Dave is also survived by his father-in-law, Ellsworth "Andy" Anderson of Albion, MI and brother-in-law, James (Diana) Anderson of St. Joseph, MI. Richard L. Middlebrook


Richard Lee Middlebrook of Munith, MI, age 84, passed away Friday, June 25, 2010 at his home. He was born on February 15, 1926 in Jackson, MI, the son of Ralph and Martha (Powell) Middlebrook. Richard had lived in the area most of his life and enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and welding. On January 31, 1967 he retired from the United States Army after 20-plus years of service. On June 4, 1956 he married Patricia L. Ewing and she survives. Also surviving are four children, Donna (David) Ross of Belleville, Gay (Ezequiel Sr.) Flores of Vandercook, Gale (Rainer) Borchert of Munith, and Dean (Corrine) Middlebrook of Mason; one brother, Clifford (Shirley) Middlebrook of California and one sister, Sally (Andy) Andrews of Jackson; ten grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Max Bishop; one sister, Colleen Thorton; and one brother, Ralph W. Middlebrook. Ella Marie Quigley of Chelsea, MI, age 93, passed away Saturday, June 19, 2010 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born on September 11, 1916, the daughter of Marion H. and Berthenia May Barrick. Ella had lived in the area since the 1930’s. She loved animals and playing the piano. Surviving are two children, Michael Quigley of Chelsea and Sandra (Jesse) Prater of Florida; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister-in-law, Ann Barrick of Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore L. Quigley; an infant daughter, Carol Ann Quigley in 1944; her siblings, Marcus Barrick, Gwendolyn Johnson, and Mary Lou Deer; and one grandson, Randy Guinan. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home with Deacon Richard Shaneyfelt officiating. Mason R. Cutler


Mason Reid Cutler of Gregory, MI, age 16, passed away Saturday, June 19, 2010. He was born October 17, 1993 in Ann Arbor. Mason completed his Junior year at Stockbridge High School and was involved in Cross Country, Golf, Wrestling, and Basketball. He was named Second Team All Conference 2009 in Cross Country. He was an excellent swimmer, loved camping and fishing up north at the family cabin in Grayling, and collecting fossils and rocks. More than anything he had a wide circle of friends and saw the best in everybody. He also loved his two dogs, Rhudy and Nutty. Surviving are his parents, Bryant Cutler of Gregory and Penny (Paul) Howard of Waterford; his siblings, Calie D. Cutler and Daniel M. Cutler; maternal grandparents, Dan and Elaine Den Houter of Whitmore Lake; and paternal grandparents, Sharon Cutler of Pinckney and Daryl (Shirley) Cutler of Lansing. He is also survived by his aunts, Kimberlee Cutler (and uncle Jack Russell) of Brighton, Anna (Ronald) Grant of Dundee and Mary (Michael) Pondell of Grand Rapids; and numerous great-aunts, great-uncles, friends, and cousins. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 25, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Stockbridge with Rev. Brian Johnson and Rev. Heidi DeMott Shanes co-officiating. Ruth A. Freitag

Freitag, (Chanel) Ruth Agnes of Diamondale (formerly of Okemos). Born February 11, 1914 to Robert and Bertha Harton, Ruth A. Freitag mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on June 19, 2010. She was a graduate of Lansing Eastern High School. She was a member of the Christian Science Church in Boston, MA and a charter member of the Second Church of Christ Scientist in Lansing. While living in Okemos, she was an active member of the Okemos Garden Club, Friends of the Library, and Brook Hollow Country Club in Williamston, MI. Her parents, husband, Otto (Bob) Freitag and first husband, D. Kenneth Chanel, preceded her in death. Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Kathy Chanel of DeWitt; two granddaughters, Sheri (Matt) Jordan of Las Vegas, NV and Pam (Darrell) Hoeve of Lansing; step-daughter, Linda Scott; two great-grandsons, Chris (Marina) Jordan; Matt Jordan; great-granddaughter, Lyndsey Chanel; great, great-grandson, Chris; sister-in-law, Earlene Chanel of Essexville, MI; nieces, Beth and Jill; and nephew, Rick. There will be a private family service later. Robert H. McClinchey


Robert H. McClinchey of Munith, MI, age 78, passed away in Jackson, Michigan on June 18, 2010. He was born the son of Roy and Mildred (Cook) McClinchey on January 14, 1932. On December 1, 1951 he married Barbara Jean (Titus) and she survives. Bob liked to play cards and was good at it. He was a 30 year veteran of the Henrietta fire department and a long time member of Munith United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Munith Lions Club where he was a past Treasurer and he retired from the Dana Corporation after 32 years of service to them. Most of all he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Rod (Kathy) McClinchey of Munith and Dawn (Jim) Ward of Rose City along with grandchildren Roy, Ryan, Justin and Kristin and six great grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister Jean Kunzelman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Esther and brother Leroy. Funeral services will be from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Larry Rubingh officiating. Gale E. Rowse age 85, of Stockbridge, MI, died June 14, 2010. He was born in Lansing on November 7, 1924 to James and Ora Rowse, who preceded him in death. He fought a courageous battle with Alzheimers and cancer for 5 years. He retired from Saginaw Asphalt Paving Company in 1986 after 26 years. His whole life was his family and he enjoyed doing everything with them. He loved making things out of wood and gave a lot of it away. Surviving is his wife of almost 61 years, Jean; two sons, Lynn (Louanne) and Terry (Anne). Five grandchildren, Heather (Aaron) Lewis, Alicia Rowse, Julia Rowse, Michael Rowse, and David Rowse. Also one brother, Arnold (Evelyn). One brother preceded him in death, Duane, and his sister-in-law, Viva. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 18, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home with Rev. Heidi DeMott Shanes officiating. Burial will follow at Plainfield Cemetery. Edward M. Buchta


Edward Michael Buchta of Dexter, MI, age 63, passed away Monday, June 14, 2010 at the Chelsea Community Hospital. He was born December 9, 1946 in Detroit, the son of Herman and Julia (Wilds) Buchta. On February 18, 1978 he married Kathaline J. Karl in Wyandotte and she survives. Edward was a skilled trade mechanic for GM. He could fix anything, loved working on cars, and built his own house. Most of all he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his wife he is survived by his daughter, Michelle (Nick) Stamboulellis and his grandchildren, Nicholas and Alex, all of Dexter, and his brother, Dennis (Patricia) Buchta of Lake St. Helen, MI. Mass of Christian Burial will be prayed at the St. Joseph Catholic Village Church, 3430 Dover St., Dexter on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Brendan J. Walsh presiding. Private interment will take place at a later date. Wendell N. Eldridge

Wendell Newman Eldridge of Albion, MI, age 78, passed away Monday, June 7, 2010 at Tendercare of Albion. He was born July 18, 1931 in Hillsdale County, MI, the son of Lawrence and Edna (Dorris) Eldridge. Wendell was a pilot for most of his life, enlisting in the Air Force during the Korean War, being honorably discharged in 1954. He then attended flight school under the GI Bill to get his civilian flight rating. He flew to Northern Michigan carrying cargo, charter trips, and teaching others to fly. He always loved anything to do with airplanes and this was his most frequent topic of conversation. He resided in Jackson in later life until moving to Albion within the last two years. Surviving are his niece, Christine (Daryl) Rhoades; grand-nephew, Donald Oteney; and great-grand-nephew, Darren Oteney. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marilyn Stratton. Audrey K. Brand

Audrey K. Brand of Grass Lake, MI, age 90, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Country Meadows Care Home. She was born February 5, 1920 and attended what is now Eastern Michigan University to become a country school teacher. She lived most of her life and worked on the Gottlieb Stoker Homestead of her grandparents along with her parents, Joseph and Ida (Stoker) Brand. She was preceded in death by her older siblings, Orrie Brand, Nina Housel, Minor (Jenny) Brand, and Floyd E. (Irene) Brand, as well as one niece, Arlene Werner. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Leslie Housel, and 10 other nieces and nephews and their families. A private burial was requested and will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Waterloo Township with her nephew, Rev. Floyd Brand, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Country Meadows Care Home in Grass Lake. Vivian M. Jurosek

Vivian Marie Jurosek of Chelsea, MI, age 76, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2010 at her home. She was born February 21, 1934 in Detroit, the daughter of Frank and Dorothy Van Hollebeke. On August 28, 1955 she married Max L. Jurosek and he preceded her in death on February 23, 1998. Vivian had lived in the area since 2007, coming from Farmington Hills. She was very good at cross-stitching and loved Frank Sinatra, Big Band music, and local town politics. She was a great mother and was a Den Mom for Cub Scouts. Surviving are three children, Michael (Wendy) Jurosek of Chelsea, Marla Jurosek of San Francisco, and Matthew (Cynthia) Jurosek of Wixom; two grandsons, Joshua and Noah Jurosek; and three siblings, Gerry (Robert) Villaire, Dorothy Malpass, and Frank (Autumn) Van Hollebeke. Mass will be held Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea with Rev. Dr. William J. Turner officiating. The family will receive friends at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with Vigil at 7:30 p.m. officiated by Deacon Tom Franklin, and also visitation Tuesday at church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. James B. Lindstrom

James B. Lindstrom of Grass Lake, MI, age 61, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010 at his home. He was born July 5, 1948 in Stockbridge, the son of Eino J. and Dorothy (Grimes) Lindstrom. On September 5, 1980 he married Joyce M. McGibney in Chelsea and she survives. He served in the Air Force, being honorably discharged in 1971, and loved fishing and hunting, especially with his muzzle loader. Most of all he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his wife he is survived by three children, Jayme (Derek) Klink, Emily (Shawn) Parks, and James B. Lindstrom, all of Grass Lake; one granddaughter, Azora G. Parks and two grandchildren on the way; and one sister, Spring (Wesley) Schultz. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Bill Lindstrom and Virginia Purdy. Marjorie M. Howell of Ann Arbor, MI, age 91, passed away Monday, May 24, 2010 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born September 18, 1918 in Greeley, CO, the daughter of Martin and Ida (Webb) Small. In 1944 she married Paul L. Howell and he preceded her in death. Marjorie was always on the go and loved to travel with friends. She enjoyed golfing and was an accomplished tennis player. Surviving are four children, Charlotte Wujek of Warren, Barbara (Nicholas) Beeson of Ann Arbor, Dave (Linda) Howell of Brighton, and Dennis (Joan) Howell of Grass Lake; eight grandchildren, Linda Yaroch, Harold Wujek, Ted and Alex Beeson, Dan and Jon Howell, and Nate and Denae Howell; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Clyde Small and Edna Roeher. Sandra Rae Osborne of Pinckney, MI, age 59, died Saturday, May 22, 2010 at her home. She was born on July 5, 1950 in Jackson, MI, the daughter of Raymond and Ila (Tracey) Abbey. Sandra had lived in the area for the past 30 years and enjoyed Bingo, Casinos, yard-saling, and her grandchildren. On June 5, 1976 she married Loy Osborne and he preceded her in death on February 6, 2006. Surviving are three children, Tim (Hilary) Abbey of Pinckney, Lesley (Jimmie Washer) Fletcher of Fife Lake, MI, and Nichole (David) Wolf of Pinckney; nine grandchildren, Cassidy, Kristen, Samantha, Dylan, Heidi, Kaitlyn, Alexandra, Timothy Jr., and Mia; three great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Madison, Mikailah; her siblings, Lorin Abbey of Stockbridge, Charlene Osborne of Leslie, Sharon Scutt of Mason, Raymond Abbey of Pleasant Lake, Richard Griffus of Jackson, and Leslie Griffus of Michigan; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Billy J. Brown of Jackson, MI, age 75, passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at Allegiance Health. He was born April 19, 1935 in Pittsford, MI, the son of Lyle and Zella (Lyons) Brown. September 11, 1954 he married Sue Anne Salyer and she preceded him in death on July 2, 2003. Billy attended Jackson High School. He loved cars, Bingo, auctioneering, and snowmobiling. He is survived by two children, Douglas (Pamela) Brown and Penny Brown, both of Jackson; two grandchildren, Alexandria and Samantha; three siblings, Dale Brown of Devils Lake, Richard Brown of Jackson, and Eunice Zakrzewski of Jackson; and a brother-in-law, Marvin (Eileen) Salyer, and sister-in-law, Pauline (Harry) Chown, both of Jackson. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Brown. Leonard M. McCalla


Leonard Matthew “Spike” McCalla of Lima Twp., MI, age 77, passed away Monday morning, May 17, 2010 at home surrounded by his family. He was born May 22, 1932 in Ann Arbor, MI, the son of Leonard J. and Viola (Lambert) McCalla. Leonard completed Ann Arbor schools and graduated from University of Michigan in 1955. He began his career as an appropriation analyst with Ford Motor Co moving to University Microfilms as a Manager of Financial Analysis in 1958. He advanced to Assistant Vice President in February 1973 with Malloy Lithographing in Ann Arbor. In 1970, Spike began a farrow to finish hog operation on the family farm in Chelsea. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. His hobbies included farming and woodworking. Above all else Leonard was a dedicated family member and enjoyed time spent with them at his Upper Peninsula hunting cabin and lake cottage. His Christian faith was strong and he was a baptized and confirmed member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ann Arbor. For the last 50 years, he was an active member of Webster United Church of Christ, Dexter. On January 26, 1957 he married Janet L. Powers and she survives. Also surviving are three children, Leonard J. (Laurie) McCalla of Grass Lake, Lucinda McCalla, and Melinda (Kirk) Hautau, both of Marshall, MI; one sister, Lucille Kollewehr of Tecumseh; seven grandchildren, L. Matthew McCalla, Charlie McCalla, K. Madison Hautau, Olivia McCalla, Henry Hautau, Morgan Hautau, and Harrison Hautau; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Helen (Robert) Schlupe, Mildred (Peter) Pegan, Dorothy (Earl) Fawcett, Geneva (George) Martin; and one brother-in-law, Clarence Kollewehr. Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Webster United Church of Christ, Dexter, with Rev. Susannah Crolius officiating. Robert L. Woods


Robert Louis Woods of Jackson, formerly Chelsea, MI, age 60, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2010 after a long illness and many years of physical challenges. He was born February 28, 1950 to Albert and Nancy Grissom Woods, and lived in the Chelsea area most of his life. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing in his early years; and was an avid sports fan. U of M football and Nascar were favorites---Go Blue!! He is survived by one sister, Evelyn Roberts of Saline; three nieces, Nancy Sodt of Manchester, Diane Hebert of Petoskey, and Mitzi Roberts of Jefferson, Wisconsin; two nephews, Walter Boike and William Boike; several great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Doris Boike and a nephew, Donald Boike. James M. Ryan

James M. Ryan of Grass Lake, formerly Ann Arbor, MI, age 65, passed away at his home on Saturday, May 15, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was born the son of Leo J. and Ruth M. (Helmer) Ryan on May 30, 1944 in Ann Arbor, MI. On December 1, 1961 he married Jacqueline M. Gallant and she survives. Jim enjoyed going for car rides any where he could go. He loved trains of all kinds and enjoyed working with wood making the grandchildren wagons and air planes. Most of all he loved his family. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his children James M. (Christine) Ryan of Hillsdale, Dennis (Lisa) Ryan of Grass Lake, and Michelle Ryan of Chelsea. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Rosie, Adam, Bethy, Luke, and Jacob, as well as his brother, William P. (Judy) Ryan of Belleville; sister, Cynthia Ryan of Livonia; sister-in-law, Ann Ryan of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas J. Ryan. Pearl Fitzsimmons


Pearl Marie Fitzsimmons of Chelsea, MI, age 85, passed away Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at her home. She was born July 12, 1924 in Chelsea, the daughter of Miles and Pearl May (Duart) Alexander. Pearl was a life-long Chelsea resident and graduated from Chelsea High School in 1942. On February 20, 1946 she married Jack C. “Bob” Fitzsimmons in Chelsea and he preceded her in death on December 14, 1991. Pearl was the voice of Chelsea Community Hospital for 30 years, working as a switchboard operator. She was a member of the North Lake United Methodist Church, Secretary to the North Lake Cemetery Board, and loved bowling, quilting, and Tigers Baseball. Also, she and her husband took care of Camp Burt Shurly for 44 years. Surviving are two daughters, Janis (Charles) Borst of Jackson and Deborah (John) Castle of Leslie, four grandchildrean, and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one sister, Emma Jane Adams, and five brothers, Albert, Warren, Harold, Tom, and Donald Alexander. Evelyn L. Schuman

Evelyn L. Schuman of Silver Lake, Dexter Twp., MI, age 91, passed away at her home on Monday, May 10, 2010. She was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan on August 28, 1918 the daughter of Frederick and Bertha (Tackman) Ziesler. She married Earl E. Schuman in Ypsilanti on June 2, 1940. She moved to the Pinckney area in 1951 where she was a 4H leader. She enjoyed decorating cakes, sewing, rug hooking, and square dancing. She is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years, Earl; two sons Errol Schuman of Clayton and Frederick Schuman of Silver Lake; one granddaughter, Angela Parker of Adrian, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Esther Babcock, a grandson Duane Schuman, and a daughter-in-law Sandy Schuman. Jack Kingsbury


John A. (Jack) Kingsbury of Scio Twp., Michigan, age 77, passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the Chelsea Community Hospital. He was born on March 6, 1933 in Port Huron, the son of Ralph and Mary (Ehle) Kingsbury. Jack had lived in Washtenaw Co. for the past 50 years. On January 20, 1953 he married Eulelia Reed in Tucson, Arizona. He loved being an exhibitor at flea markets and computers. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eulelia, two sons Jack Kingsbury and Joseph Kingsbury, both of Ann Arbor; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three brothers: Keith of Arizona, Larry of Washington State, and David of Brooklyn, MI, and one sister Peggy (Bob) of Florida. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea. Richard C. Moody


Richard C. Moody of Munith, MI, age 68, passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2010. He was born on June 2, 1941 in Potsdam, New York the son of Richard V. and Marion M. (Burr) Moody. He had lived in the Munith area for the past twenty years, moving from Manchester. On November 1, 1961, he married Jacquelin A. Bruening in Detroit, Michigan. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1963-1966. He worked as an Electrician for 36 years, and was a member of Local 252 of Ann Arbor and Local 58 of Detroit. He loved golf, boating and horses. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame of the Michigan Quarter Horse Assoc., and was nominated Father of the Year by the Youth of the Michigan Quarter Horse Assoc. Richard is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jacquelin, and two children, son Jeffrey Moody (Linda) of Munith and granddaughter Dana Kay; daughter Michele Moody (Terry Lewis, Jr.) of Grass Lake; two sisters, Marianne Barlow of New York, and Lucy (Lester) Bilow of New York; and a special cousin Rick. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea with Rev. Kathy Schell officiating. Private burial will be in Munith Cemetery. William F. Heimerdinger


William F. Heimerdinger of Chelsea, MI, age 58, died Saturday, May 1, 2010 at his home. He was born November 17, 1951 in Ann Arbor, MI the son of Andrew and Coralee (Lanning) Heimerdinger. Bill had lived in the area since 1987. He loved farming, wine making, tractors (Allis Chalmers), and working at "Pioneer Days" at the Waterloo Farm Museum. On September 8, 1984 he married Lucy F. Bott in Ann Arbor, and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Rebeca and Tonya Heimerdinger, both of Chelsea; one granddaughter, Trinity Cole; one sister Elaine (Robert) Debelak of Trenary, MI; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John Klakulak, Laurance Bott, Stephen Bott, Marijo Kelly, Beverly Cox, and Max Steffen; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Janet Klakulak; and one sister-in-law, Jenny Steffen. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Mary Catholic Church. Daniel L. McConeghy Sr.

Daniel Lee McConeghy, Sr. of Jackson, formerly Grass Lake and Stockbridge, MI, age 58, passed away Thursday, April 29, 2010 at his home. He was born February 19, 1952 in Jackson, the son of Dean J. and Maxine (Roark) McConeghy. He graduated from Stockbridge H.S. in 1971 and served in the U.S. Army for over 14 years, being discharged in October 1989. His favorite pastimes included flying airplanes, gardening, out-of-doors, dogs, and playing 500 Rummy. Surviving are his mother of Grass Lake; his fiancée, Ivy McConeghy of Jackson; three children, Daniel Jr. (Doris) McConeghy of New York State, Bianca (Kevin) Clow of Phoenix, AZ, and Hans McConeghy of Onondaga; his siblings, David McConeghy of the Philippines, Sharlene (Lee Stanard) McConeghy of Maple Rapids, MI, Marilyn (William) Martin of Jonesville, MI, and Dennis McConeghy and Beverly McConeghy, both of Grass Lake; and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and an infant sister, Virginia. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 3, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stockbridge with Rev. Sharon Gladys (Hodgkin) Watts of Grass Lake, MI, age 66, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2010 at her home. She was born June 2, 1943 in Ann Arbor, the daughter of Fred M. and Gladys Hodgkin. Sharon loved garage sales, antiques, and spending time with her grandchildren. She had lived in the Grass Lake area for 20 years, coming from Dexter. Surviving are two children, Terry L. Hampton of Jackson and Melvin Jr. (Charlotte) Watts of Grass Lake; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin F. Watts Sr.; her parents; one brother, Fred Hodgkin; and two sisters, Maurine Snay and Sandra Grenier. Jill Bauer


Jill Arlene (Harvey) Bauer of Chelsea, MI, age 64, died Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor. Jill was born August 7, 1945 in Gregory, MI, the daughter of Delbert and Arlene Harvey. She loved gardening, especially flowers and vegetables, was an avid reader and a member of the Book Club at Chelsea Library. On January 29, 1965 she married Joseph D. Bauer and he survives. Also surviving are her sons, Brent (Monique) Bauer of Howell and Brad (Beverly) Bauer of Alabama; three grandchildren, Chloe, Katherine, and Henry; three sisters, Sue Jacobs of Port Huron, Janice (Bill) Widmayer of Dexter, and Becky Wild of Chelsea; one brother, Mike (Dee Dee) Harvey of Kettering, OH; and numerous nieces, nephews, and life-long friends. Visitation will be held Monday, May 3, 2010 at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home from 1-5 p.m. A private memorial service and burial will take place at a later date. Carly Elizabeth George of Stockbridge, MI, age 8, passed away Friday, April 23, 2010 at the Chelsea Community Hospital. She was born on January 2, 2002 in Ann Arbor, Michigan the daughter of Paul and Joany (Risner) George. Carly was in the first grade at Dansville Public Schools. She enjoyed playing ball, singing, dancing, reading books, and puzzles. Surviving are her parents of Stockbridge, brother (Bubba) Brad George of Stockbridge, and sister (Sissy) Ashleigh George of Kalamazoo; her maternal grandparents Bernard and June Risner of Stockbridge and paternal grandmother Linda Wolfenbarger; aunts and uncles, Brian (Michele) Risner of Illinois, Brook (Sandy) Risner of Dansville, David George of Fowlerville, Denise (Mike) Cavander of Stockbridge, and Lisa George of Canton; and cousins Travis and Brittany Risner. Renee A. Jahn


Renee Anne Jahn of Pinckney, formerly Chelsea, MI, age 47 passed away Friday, April 23, 2010 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. She was born the daughter of Charlene and Kenneth Scott on June 23, 1962 in Ann Arbor, MI. On November 22, 1980, she was married to Steven R. Jahn (formerly of Flint, MI). Renee had an artistic eye and enjoyed fashion and interior decorating; this was seen in her talents in worship dance and the arts and as a nail technician. She and Steve have been members of Shekinah Christian Church of Ann Arbor for over 23 years, where for many years was a leader in the arts, pageantry and worship dance ministry. She also enjoyed singing and music in the church and with her husband. Faith, family, and friends were most important to Renee. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children Rachelle (Chris) DeHerrera of Manchester; Jason Jahn of Chelsea; and Brittany Jahn of Ann Arbor. Also surviving are her grandchildren Miquel Grammatico, Logynn DeHerrera, Gabriella DeHerrera, Christian DeHerrera, and Cassius Jahn. Other survivors include her mother Charlene (Delmer) Schindler; and sisters Kathy (Tom) Moeller and Jennifer Scott as well as three stepsisters. She leaves behind many friends aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, and brother and sister in-laws. Renee was preceded in death by her father Kenneth Scott. Marilyn (Klee) Hamilton of Leslie, MI. Born in Jackson, MI on March 11, 1931, Marilyn was the 8th of 10 children of Robert and Rose Klee. She passed on April 22, 2010, surrounded by loved ones. A graduate of Vandercook Lake High, Marilyn was a loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, and enjoyed many hobbies from candy-making and cake decorating to quilting and crocheting. A gifted artist, her beautiful hand-painted porcelain dolls remain coveted gifts. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Bob, Jack, Donald, Carl, Paul, six sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law and one grandson Robert. With Garth Sr., her husband of 45 years, Marilyn built a family that includes daughters Robin Baer of Leslie, Beth (Shawn)Wells of Land O' Lakes, FL, Janet Humenik of Prospect, PA, Terrie (Bill) Wilson of Albion, and sons Michael (Carrie) Baer of Lansing, Garth Jr. (Gay) of Leslie and Harry of Oakland, CA. Marilyn is also survived by 14 grandchildren Tony, Stephanie, Nate, Amanda, Jason, Heather, Sarrah, Larry, Matthew, Jasper, Monique, Christian, Jacob, and Grace, and six great-grandchildren Cheyanne, Micah, Madisen, Faye, Cassandra and Hannah, as well as sisters Ruth Vilmnot of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Rosalyn Doughtery of Battle Creek and brothers Ed Klee of Grass Lake and Larry (Treva) Klee of Vandercook Lake, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. Luther D. Minix


Luther Dean Minix of Dansville, MI, died on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at the age of 78. He was born in Foraker, KY on September 27, 1931, to Noah Minix and Ressie Howard Minix. Luther retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. and proudly served in the Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed spending time with his family, serving as Elder of the Deerfield Primitive Baptist Church, working the garden, hunting and playing cards. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rosa Lee (Salyer) Minix, daughters Karen (David) Sheathelm, Sharon Graham, Brenda (Ronnie) Kingrea and son Dean (Sandy) Minix; 11 granddaughters; 4 grandsons by marriage; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers J.B. (Mildred) Minix, Joe (Vickie) Minix; 2 sisters Alice (Junior) Keeton and Marcella McDaniel; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces. Preceding him in death are his parents, 2 brothers Arthur and L.D.; 3 sisters Audrey Montgomery, Florida Minix, Katherine Minix and son-in-law Eric Graham. Robert A. Usher Sr. of Jackson, formerly of Chelsea, MI, age 73 passed away on April 18, 2010 in Jackson at the Bethany Care facility. He was born the son of Clifford and Rose (Molnar) Usher on December 23, 1936 in Wayne County. On June 29 1957 he married Marion L. Frabutt and she survives. Bob was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed ice fishing, snowmobiles, hunting, camping and waterskiing. In addition to his wife Marion, he is survived by his son Robert (Teresa) Usher Jr. of Grass Lake and two grandchildren Jeremy (Katie) Usher and Rachel Usher. Also surviving are his brothers Clifford Usher, Bill (Maryetta) Usher and Donald (Eddie) Usher. Ruth Lane


Ruth Melissa Lane of Chelsea, MI, age 89, passed away Thursday, April 15, 2010 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. She was born July 10, 1920 in Detroit, the daughter of Arthur and Mabel (Wilson) Burrows. On January 16, 1943 she married Richard Jack Lane in Detroit and he survives. Ruth was a quiet, gentle lady with a beautiful smile who was an avid gardener and loved crafting, needlework, and chocolate. She was active in the PTA, Girl Scouts, and Special Education reform in schools, educating the public about Down Syndrome. Surviving are two daughters, Judy (Fred) Feldkamp and Sue (John) Williams; her grandchildren, Geoffrey, James, Julie, Thomas, Elizabeth, Melissa, and Rebecca; her great-grandchildren, Audrey, Penelope, Albert, Eskil; and her siblings, Charles Burrows of Florida and June Wenger of Grand Rapids. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Lane, in 2008. A memorial service will take place Monday, April 19, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at Silver Maples of Chelsea with Rev. Ogie Kilgore


Ogie Kilgore of Munith, MI, age 84, passed away Monday, April 12, 2010 at her home. She was born February 10, 1926 in Bosco, KY, the daughter of Charles and Nora (Joseph) Jones. On December 12, 1945 she married Graham Kilgore and he preceded her in death. Ogie liked quilting, cooking, and was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She is survived by her children, Betty (Jr.) Baisden of Munith, Linda (Dewey) Baisden of Munith, Billy (Charlene) Kilgore of Jackson, Robert (Judy) Kilgore of Munith, Jewel (Dennis) Bradley of Concord, MI, Nora Jean Kilgore of Munith; 24 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great grandchildren; and two siblings, Alonzo Jones of Kendallville, IN and Brenda (Rondal) Wicker of Ohio. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Gail; three grandchildren, Robert Kilgore, Lori Ann Baisden, and Steven Baisden; one great-grandson, Ethan Duncan; and eight siblings. Janice Dorer


Janice Elaine (Bovay) Dorer of Chelsea, MI, age 76, peacefully passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2010. Janice was born December 13, 1933 in Saginaw, MI, and is preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Mildred Bovay. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Gil Dorer; her daughter, Cynthia Dorer of Woodstock, GA; her son, Robert (Sally) Dorer of Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren, Ethan and Jenna; her brother-in-law, Gary of Sedona, AZ; many nieces and nephews; and a lifetime of wonderful friends. It was during the loving embrace of her husband, Gil, and her two children, Cyndy and Bob, that she passed from this earth. The moment will always be etched in their memory. Shelly (our wonderful caregiver), Hailey (her 8-year-old angel of a daughter), and Beth (our warm-hearted nurse from Hospice) were present as she passed from this world. The Hospice people were so kind and gentle as they guided us through this journey. Her passing was amazingly ethereal. Jan chose the time to pass as our dear friends Arlene Riba and Dave Busfield stopped by to check on her. Finally she is at peace and rid of that dastardly Alzheimer's disease. Jan was a special, gifted person. She had a love for people, especially children. They would flock to her knowing her gentle kindness was there to warm them. Another gift was to her children, Cyndy and Bob. She was always there to the best of her ability and loved them unconditionally. Jan was an artist. Not just an artist but one who was given the ability to touch people with her paintings. Hundreds of her paintings hang in homes throughout this country and others. It was her gift to the world. She was amazingly creative and able to speak to those with the ability to see the message. The message was always kind and gentle. Few are so rewarded to hear how much they have enriched the lives to those able the see her message through art. It is a personal gift to be able to create and also a gift to receive it. Many letters arrive expressing the joy received from her art. One letter says, "I have a depression problem. Every morning the first thing I do is view each of your seven paintings. They make me smile and help with the new day." Another, "Every New Years Eve we, husband and wife, have a glass of wine together and think of all the wonderful things that have happened to us in the previous year. We want you to know the joy your paintings have given us and how much we love the time we have spent with the two of you. Please know you are special in our hearts." There are many more such heartfelt letters in her collection. Many have commented on how humble she was saying, "She has no idea of how good or successful an artist she is." What a reward to be so acknowledged during one's lifetime. Gil is so proud to have been able to care for her and keep her here in the comfort of their home. It was a struggle but not difficult, for her twinkle remained throughout. Jan's decline was a period of sorrow and joy for her humor did not leave. A few years ago Jan and Gil decided to donate their bodies to the U of M Medical School. Hopefully her gift may help medical science in the future. It is her last gift to humanity. There will be a visitation at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, 901 N. Main St. Chelsea, MI 48118, (734) 475-1444, on Sunday, April 11, 2010 from 1-3 p.m. Jan did not like being singled out even for an award. The visitation will be a celebration of her life in keeping with her wishes. If you wish to do something in Jan's memory be kind to a person who needs it.

Mary Louise Boyce


Mary Louise Boyce of Stockbridge, MI, age 87, passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at the Allegiance Hospice Home in Jackson. She was born on June 22, 1922 in Dansville, MI, the daughter of Fay M. and Gladys L. (Smith) Townsend. She is survived by her husband, Wynn C. Boyce, whom she married on December 25, 1942. Mary Louise enjoyed playing games and cards, going to church dinners, attending Senior activities, collecting owls, and playing the harmonica. She worked for Howlett Hardware, Fran’s Dress Shop, the Howlett family and the D & C Offices. She was a member of the Fun and Study Club, Farm Bureau, Stockbridge United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She went back to school and received her High School diploma from Stockbridge High School in 1979. She was a loving wife for 67 years, a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mary Louise is survived by her children, Rosalyn (Keith) Otto of Pleasant Lake and Marilyn (Thomas) Zick of Lewiston, MI. Also surviving are her sisters, Helen Sharland of Stockbridge, Dorothy Humrich of Webberville, Geraldine (Melvin) Battige of Pinellas Park, FL, and Elaine Bunker of Dansville; one brother, Loal (Helen) Townsend of Chelsea; her grandchildren, Melissa (Jeff) Korol of Wexford, PA, Tina (Jason) Gary of Tecumseh, Brent (Andrea) Otto of Livonia, and Angela (Brian) Carman of Wexford, PA; and her great-grandchildren, Ethan, Corlissa, Brayden, and Makenna Otto of Livonia, Madison and Alexandra Korol of Wexford, PA, Justin Carman and Carman baby due soon of Wexford, PA; two brothers-in-law, Daniel Waltz of Mason and Max (Mary Lou) Boyce of Stockbridge; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Wasson of Mason and Joyce Boyce of Chelsea; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Harvey Morrell


Harvey J. Morrell of Stockbridge, MI, age 71, passed away Saturday, April 3, 2010 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born on January 16, 1939 in Jackson, MI, the son of Harvey F. and Margaret A. (Johnson) Morrell. On October 17, 1970 he married Violet E. Coppock and she survives. He worked for Dana Corporation in Chelsea for 32 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Stockbridge United Methodist Church and served as lay delegate to conference; former president of UAW local 437 in Chelsea with 20-plus years leadership; past Stockbridge Masonic Lodge president; active in the Stockbridge Lions Club; former Stockbridge Village Council member and Stockbridge Athletic Booster President. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1957-61. Surviving are four children, Lesa Morrell of Thornton, CO, Harvey II (Amy) Morrell of Stockbridge, Kim (Wes) Treaster of Grass Lake, and Kenneth (Patty) Hopkins of Chelsea; and seven grandchildren, Eleni, Michael, Jake, Alex, Lindsey, Connor, and Maegen. Frank Hill


George Franklin "Frank" Hill of Chelsea, MI, age 80, passed away Sunday, April 4, 2010 at the Arbor Hospice Residence. He was born on November 3, 1929 in Paragould, AR, the son of George T. and Velzia (Howe) Hill. On June 4, 1960 he married Nancy Lee Smith and she survives. Frank served his country in the Air Force from 1948 to 1952 in Korea and Germany. He retired from Chelsea Milling Company in 1997. Frank liked classic and antique cars but most of all loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. In addition to his wife he is survived by two children, Kelly (Michael) Minick of Grass Lake and Tom (Wendy) Hill of Manchester; five grandchildren, Tommy (Tracie) Minick of Jackson, Ben and Alex Minick of Grass Lake, and Shawn and Sara Lozwiski of Jackson; one brother, Tommy (Harrie Leigh) Hill of Paragould, AR; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two siblings, Charles Hill in 1980 and Martha Camp in 2009. A memorial service will be held Friday, April 9, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home with Rev. Kathy Schell officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arbor Hospice Foundation.
