Germano lived a full life in service to the disabled and those who were suffering or dying, as a member of Christ’s priesthood here on earth. He began his career at the Parish of St. Joseph at Trionfale in Rome, Italy, headquarters of the Pious Union of St. Joseph; and from there was transferred to the Minor Seminary at Alberobello near Bari. In the fall of 1959, he accepted an assignment in the United States, and was sent to the Don Guanella School in Springfield, PA. Six months later in the spring of 1960, he came to Chelsea, MI and helped to develop the original program at St. Louis School for Boys. Fr. Germano was the Director of St. Louis School from 1974-77, and returned to Springfield, Pa. in 1977 to become the Novice Master and Superior of the Seminary at Don Guanella Formation House. ’Bob’ to most people, ’B.D.’ to his adoring wife of 37 years Katy, died November 10, 2007 at home peacefully surrounded by his loving family, after a long and exhausting battle with lymphoma. He was born in Ottawa, Ohio June 2, 1946, the son of Abraham and Rosemary Davis (Uffenorde). He and his sister, Judy Henn (Ken) grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and he graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1964. And his six grandchildren who were the light of his life, especially in the last few months: Dominic (13), Grace (6), Riley (5), Dean (2), Alex (2), and the littlest angel Robert Allen Davis II (4 months).
He founded Pilot Industries, Incorporated in 1977 and grew the company from one employee to 3000 employees and 10 plants world-wide over 25 years. He served on the Board of Trustees of Chelsea Hospital, eventually rising to Chairman. He was a man of the utmost honor, and impeccable integrity. He worked 16 hours a day for many years, but never once missed any of his children’s activities. He loved to fish, taking his children on many fondly remembered fishing adventures in Canada. And he had an absolute passion for basketball! He played in several leagues up until the time of his illness and received great satisfaction from the competition as well as the camaraderie of his fellow players. To everyone he met, he was a mentor, a life coach, a friend and an inspiration. He will be so incredibly missed. Lucille was a delightful soul whose kindness, hope and trust were unshakable, even when beset by arthritis and memory loss. Lucille was proud to be a teacher. She put herself through college, graduating from the University of Wisconsin in 1943. She taught in several Wisconsin school districts, but her goal was to teach in Madison. When she lost out on a Madison position in 1949, she interviewed in Ann Arbor and took a post at Jones Junior High. She said many times that life in Ann Arbor had proved to be an acceptable alternative. Lucille married Jerry Wiarda in 1950. Jerry was a widower with two small boys. Her willingness to marry him, be a mother to their children, and ’make a home, ’ was a source of amazement to him throughout their 52-year marriage. She was in charge of her household. She had the respect of her husband and children. Her grandchildren thrived under her attention, and benefited from her sharp teacher’s instincts. Lucille worked for many years in the Cancer Registry department at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, and served on its Board of Deacons. She was a volunteer visitor to hospital patients. She opened her home to out-of-town guests whose family members were receiving long-term treatment at the University of Michigan Hospitals. None left a stranger. She moved to the Chelsea Retirement Community in 2001. Her family is profoundly grateful for the friendship and love shown to Lucille by the CRC staff. She is survived by her children: John (Patricia) of Winsted, CT; David (Sharron) of Grand Rapids; Richard of Tucson, AZ; and Edith (Robert Christie) of Chelsea.
