Warren H. Porath Sr.
Of Chelsea, MI

Age 83, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Twp. He was born January 20, 1925 in Summit, South Dakota the son of Lawrence and Regina (Jerde) Porath. Warren moved to the Chelsea area as a young boy and lived here most of his life. On July 28, 1945, he married Rosetta F. Robinson. He worked in the construction business for over 50 years. He established his own construction company in 1958, Porath Construction, working with his son Warren Porath Jr., building houses in the Chelsea Area. An avid outdoorsman, he built a cabin in Rose City, where he enjoyed deer hunting. He made several fishing trips to Canada with his wife and family. Warren and Rosetta raised their three children in Chelsea and were members of the First United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife of nearly 63 years, Rosetta; sons Warren Jr. (Pauline) Porath of Chelsea, and Lawrence (Linda) Porath of Charlevoix, and one daughter Shelly (Paul) Stringer of Flushing; eight grandchildren: Mark (Lisa ) Porath, Crystal (Steve) Heydlauff, Lucas (Jane) Porath, Jacob (Amanda) Porath, Ryan Stringer, Daniel Stringer, Joseph Stringer, and Kathryn Stringer; eight great-grandchildren: Michael, Taylor, Kevin, Reece, Kyle, Emma, Foster and Jackson; two brothers, Lawrence Jr. (Janet) Porath of Houghton Lake, and Harold (Joan) Porath of Munith, and one sister-in-law, Mary Porath of Chelsea; also his faithful friend and companion, his black lab Cody. He was preceded in death by two brothers Royce Porath and Donald Porath. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2008, at 2:00 p.m., from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home with Rev. Joy Barrett officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove East Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 5:00-8:00 p.m.; also Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Chelsea or the Huron Valley Humane Society.
Lorine Ellenwood
Of Chelsea

Age 85, passed away at home surrounded by her family on May 28, 2008. She was born the daughter of Clare W. and Agnes (Bell) Brown. On August 23, 1942 she married George E. Ellenwood, and he preceded her in death on August 14, 1989. Lorine was known to all as a very hard worker. She was known to many at the Wolverine Bar where she worked for many years. When she was not at the Wolverine, she was a 4-H Leader, Girl Scout Leader, and cook for everyone. Faith, family and friends were most important to Lorine. Lorine is survived by her children Sharon (Ellenwood) Biggs of Chelsea, Sandra (Mac) Davis of Gregory, Sally Ellenwood of Chelsea and Paula (Tony) Clark of Chelsea. Also surviving are her grandchildren Daniel Jr., Michael, Jessica, and George, along with several great-grandchildren and her nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her brother Emmerson “Skip” Wheeler of Chelsea, and her sister Betty Hough of Florida. The family would like to thank the following special people that helped the Ellenwood family during this time, Joe and Judy Merkel, Arlene Gillogs, Debi Gale, Tiffi Portito, as well as her many special friends, and you know who you are! In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Susie Kiner, and her son, Daniel T. Ellenwood, as well as her sister, Mary Ann Eder and a young sister, Haroldine. Mildred E. Knisely
Of Chelsea, formerly of Dexter, MI

Age 90, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2008 at the Chelsea Retirement Community, Towsley Village. She was born on the Noah Farm in Dexter Twp. on August 2, 1917, the daughter of Perry and Bertha (Wood) Noah. She lived in the area her entire life. On May 31, 1936 she married Holton H. Knisely and enjoyed almost 72 years together. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and needlework. She and her husband loved to travel worldwide, and worked with missionaries in Ecuador several times. She especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as family always came first. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved balloons. She was a member of the North Lake United Methodist Church. Mildred is survived by her four children: Lorna (Harold ’James’) Eberts, of Tawas City, David (Janet) Knisely, of Chelsea, Eric (Beth Ann) Knisely, of Dexter, and Beth Emilie (Michael) Folts of Grass Lake; eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Saralu (Gordon) Chamberlain, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Laurence (Esther) Noah, and one sister, Florence (Floyd) Boyce. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 30, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. from the North Lake United Methodist Church, with Rev. Alice Sheffield officiating. Burial will follow at the North Lake Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. A Memorial Service will also be held at the Chelsea Retirement Community Towsley Chapel on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Daniel K. Grignon
Of Gregory, MI

Age 63, passed away at the University of Michigan Hospital on Saturday, May 24, 2008. He was born May 4, 1945 in Ann Arbor, MI the son of Kenneth and Betty (Warden) Grignon. Daniel worked as a test driver for Chrysler Proving Grounds for 30 years. He had a special love for cars, especially sports cars and NASCAR, as well as tractors. He is survived by one daughter, Shelley Braden, of Florida, two sisters, Pamela (David) Carver, of Tennessee, and Becky (Pete) Grasshoff of Ann Arbor; three nephews, Jason and Jeremy Grasshoff, and Michael Klapperich, and one niece, Melissa Hill, as well as his special friend, Kat Rogers. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 30, 2008, 2:30 p.m. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea, with Rev. Kathy Schell officiating. Glenn L. Lingerfelt
of Chelsea , MI

Age 80, passed away at the University of Michigan Hospital on May 16, 2008. He was born the son of Oscar and Susie (Johnson) Lingerfelt on April 13, 1928 in Wartrace TN. On July 11, 1953 he married Janie Breen in Detroit, MI and she preceded him in death on September 2, 1987. Glenn was a retired plumber from the Local 98 Union Hall and a member of the VFW. Glenn is survived by his children Karen Brown of Stockbridge, Sandra Leming & husband David of Belleville, IL and Eric of Florida; grandchildren Ryan Brown and Brooks Leming; brother Oscar Lingerfelt Jr. of Florida, and sister Jewel Haggard of Chatanooga, TN. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by 3 brothers. According to Glennʼs wishes there will be no services and a private burial will take place at Mt. Hope Waterloo Cemetery . Arrangements are by the Staffan-Mitchell funeral home.
Terry G. Ferris

Age 59, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2008 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. Terry was born on November 10, 1948 in Lansing, Michigan, the son of Donald and Virginia (Gilbert) Ferris. Terry graduated from Chelsea High School in 1966. He was employed by St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor for 30 years as an orderly and later a cardiac perfusionist, providing critical life support to patients undergoing open heart surgery. Terry took great pride in his work and was an active member of the American Academy of Cardiac Perfusionists. In addition, he had a great passion for collecting antiques of all kinds, including Fiesta Ware and Depression Glass. He also enjoyed carpentry and remodeling. Terry suffered a severe stroke in 2000 and showed tremendous courage and strength in his struggle to recover. He was a good and loyal friend with a great sense of humor. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brothers Dennis (Alicia) Cosgrove of Spring Valley, Wisconsin and John Ferris of Dunedin, Florida. Also surviving are uncle Robert Eisele of Chelsea, aunt Margaret Gilbert and cousin William Gilbert of Dexter, cousins Kathy (Gilbert) Warner of Ann Arbor, Patricia (Eisele) Scott of Clarkston, and Sandra Eisele of Gregory, step-mother Betty Ferris of Dunedin, Florida, and nephews Colin, Kyle and Kenny Cosgrove of Spring Valley, Wisconsin. The family also wishes to express appreciation for the loving and patient care provided for Terry by his good friend, Kevin Dreyer of Dearborn. Maxine M. Fletcher
Of Stockbridge, Mi.

Age 87, died Saturday evening May 17, 2008 at her home. She was born on June 7, 1920 in Salyersville, Kentucky the daughter of Sidney and Nell (Bailey) Patrick. She had lived in the area for the past 70 years and worked for the Chelsea Retirement Community. Maxine was a member of the Stockbridge Church of God, and enjoyed her family. On June 20, 1942 she married Herman Fletcher and he survives, also surviving are three children, Donald (Sharon) Fletcher of South Carolina, Ralph (Linda) Fletcher of Stockbridge, and Allen Fletcher of Stockbridge. Two sisters, Jean Madison of Charlotte, and Orvie (Frank) Watson of Grand Rapids. Nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter Wanda Short, one great grandson Brandon Short, one brother and two sisters. Funeral services will be Wednesday May 21, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Fletcher Family. Stanley V. Bourne

Stan died peacefully at home at age 80 on May 12, 2008. He was born in Detroit, MI to Cecil and Zana (Haskin) Bourne. In 1949 he married Betty Jean Selleck. Faith, family and friends were important to Stan. Besides his ministry, he also enjoyed many outdoor activities. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, his children: Bonnie Santoro of Redford Township, MI, Brad (Dianne) Bourne of Webberville, MI, and Lorrie (Michael) Roberts of Rogers City, MI; his brother Ted Bourne of Tecumseh, MI; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, as well as his spiritual family. The family will receive friends at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea on Friday, May 16 from 2-8 p.m. A memorial will take place on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Gregory Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, with a private burial at Grandlawn Cemetery in Detroit, MI.
Gerald A. Myers
Of Chelsea, MI

Age 61, changed his address from Chelsea to Paradise on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at Chelsea Community Hospital. He was born on May 15, 1946 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the son of Clayton and Genevieve (Valant) Myers. Mr. Myers was a Registered Land Surveyor for 30 years. He was a very active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Chelsea, a former Church Council member, Eucharistic minister, Scripture reader, Sexton of the Zion Cemetery, Zion Cemetery board member, Confirmation instructor, and served on the church property committee. He was also a participant in the Lutheran Via de Cristo movement and was a faithful servant to his Lord. Jerry loved everything about the out of doors. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a life member of the VFW Post 5319 of Athens, MI. He was a friend to all and a father figure to many, and just in case you weren’t aware, the North Pole might not be the same this year. On June 3rd, 1967 he married Georgia J. Fox in Union City, MI and she survives. Also surviving are his mother, two daughters, Angela (Michael) Klapperich and Sheryl Myers, all of Chelsea, two granddaughters, Cassady Wilson-Klapperich and Sadie Klapperich, two nephews, Thomas (Mistel) Myers and Timothy (Shannon) Myers, both of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Thomas Myers. Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. from Zion Lutheran Church, Chelsea, with Pastor Doris Sparks officiating. Burial will follow at the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. Bobbie Irene Schultz

Age 62 died unexpectedly May 7, 2008. She was born on September 12, 1945 and was the daughter of L.T. and Lillie Sutfin. On November 9, 1968 she married Ronald E. Schultz and he survives. Bobbie was known as a very outgoing and strong woman. She loved to get the family together for big dinners and was known as the glue that made the family stick together. Bobbie enjoyed reading, watching movies, planting flowers and spending time with her friends and family. Her greatest love was her husband Ron. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters Robin(Jerry) Lilly of Ypsilanti, Kim (Steve) Peckerman of Maricopa, AZ and Deanna(Brad) Hoffman of Gregory. Also surviving are her grandchildren Justin and McKenzie as well as her brother Roy (Niki) Sutfin of AR and her sister Barbara (Tom) Kuzma of Omer; her mother-in-law Margaret Antcliff and close friend Judi Crysler. A Memorial service will take place on Saturday May 10, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. with the Rev. Kathy Schell officiating from the Staffan-Mitchell funeral home. Dr. Lucile K. Kuchera
of Pinckney, MI

Age 89, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, May 4, 2008. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at the Gregory Community Church, 126 Church St., Gregory, MI, with Rev. Heidi DeMott Shanes officiating. Burial will be at the Sheridan Cemetery in Sheridan, Wyoming. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Lucile lost her father at the age of 11, and she and her brothers assisted their mother working on the farm through the Great Depression. Lucile graduated from Pinckney High School in 1938. She then began to work her way through college, graduating from Northwestern University, and then from Wayne Medical School, where she was one of only three women in the class. After graduating from medical school, Lucile moved to Wyoming and became the town doctor in the coal-mining community of Monarch, WY, where she met Andy Kuchera. They were married in 1951. When the mines closed, Lucile and Andy moved to the mountain community of Story, WY, where Lucile was again the town doctor, frequently making house calls in the snow. Lucile later moved back to Michigan to care for her aging mother. She worked as a physician at the University of Michigan, and also at the Veterans Hospital in Battle Creek. She was still working full-time as a physician at the age of 80. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Andy, in 1998, and one brother Al, in 2007. Left behind to cherish her memory are her two sons, John Kuchera of Waco, Texas, and Jim Kuchera of Boise, Idaho, one brother, Andy, of Nashville, TN, and four grandchildren, Holly, Andy, Meredith and Julienne. The family wishes to express its special thanks to Mom’s caregivers, who brightened her life immeasurably: Rita Adair, Verna Budzik, Violet Morrell, and Don Smith. Josephine Barker
Of Jackson, MI

Age 75 passed away at Foote hospital in Jackson on May 5, 2008. She was born the daughter of William B. Elliott and Gustavia (Adams) Elliott on March 29, 1933 in Virgie, Kentucky. On December 26, 1953 she married Carl Barker and he preceded her in death in 1984. Josephine enjoyed cooking and wanted to feed anyone that stopped by. She enjoyed bowling and loved her dog Chip. Most of all she loved her family. Josephine is survive by her children Billy (Diane) Barker of Stockbridge, Todd Barker of Jackson, Greg Barker of Jackson and Joe (Mitsy) Barker of Stockbridge as well as her grandchildren Derek, William, Ryan, Jeff, Adam, Corey and Kim along with five great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers Mander, Raymond, AC, and Sam Elliott. Funeral services will be Friday at the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral home with Pastor Jeff Howard officiating. Stevens, James Benjamin
Of Ann Arbor, MI

Passed away at home on Thursday, May 1st, 2008 after a long and courageous battle against cancer. He was born in Bay City, Michigan on January 11, 1935, to Lloyd and Grace Stevens. He graduated from Bay City Central High School and attended the University of Michigan where he studied engineering. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was proud to say he played ’first trumpet’ in the 3rd Army Band. Jim was passionate about wonderful music and great cars. He retired from Ford Motor Company in 1997, engineered and raced cars with Shaker Engineering, built audio speakers and sound systems with Sonant Corp, and recorded live concerts with Prestant Records. Jim’s influence through these companies, which he established and ran, inspired and enriched the lives of those he encountered. Jim was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe, MI.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle, his children, Peter (Kathleen), Karin (Craig) Shamlian, and Katherine (Scott) Meade, his step-children, Kelly, Jeffrey and Mark McDermott, and 18 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Ann (James) LaBreck, sister-in-law, Janet (Warren) Mosley, brother-in-law, Richard (Barbara) Beck, several nieces and nephews, and his loving cat, Doodle.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at Webster United Church of Christ, 5484 Webster Church Road, Dexter, MI. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to Webster Church or the Monroe First Presbyterian Church Music Department, 108 Washington Street, Monroe, MI.
