Lawrence L. "Larry" Titus

of Stockbridge, Michigan, age 70, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at his home. He was born on November 12, 1938 in Vestburg, Michigan, the son of Clark W. and Eileen (Gorsuch) Titus. On December 12, 1992 he married Alice F. (Salyers) and she survives. Larry was so intelligent that he could fix or build just about anything; he was always helping someone and happy to do it. Larry loved life and having a good time. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Clark (Dawn) Titus of Munith, Debra Titus Collins of Pinckney, and Steven Titus of Harlingen, TX, and Alice's children, Chris (April) Bates and Rhonda Bates. Larry is also survived by his siblings, Dianna (Dan) Maynard, Shirryl Sanyer, Art (Phoebe) Stanley, Terry (Annette) Stanley, Dennis (Liz) Stanley, Lori Henderson, Pam (Rick) Houser, Yvonne (Larry) Brinskowski, and Linda Titus; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Homer Stanley; his first wife, Lois Titus; and his sister, Kathy Dewolf. Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time. Jessica Jean Huling

of Jackson, formerly of Milan, Michigan, age 34, passed away at the Allegiance Hospice Home in Jackson on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Jessica was born on March 16, 1975 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the daughter of Kenneth and Patricia (Hutchinson) Huling. She graduated from Milan High School in 1994. Jessica had lived in the Jackson area since 2002, moving from Ypsilanti. One of Jessica's favorite pastimes was making jewelry. She also loved going to Cedar Point. Jessica is survived by her three children, Michael Fedewa, Mercedes Fedewa, and Haley Stockwell, all of Ann Arbor; her parents, of Milan; one sister, Judy (Jack) Wright of Ypsilanti; four brothers, James Huling of Whitmore Lake, John Huling of Ann Arbor, Jerry (Donna) Huling of Jackson, and Jack Jeffery (Kelly) Huling of Whitaker; several nieces and nephews; and her companion, Tyler Branham. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea with Chaplain Barbara Van Dyke officiating. Della Sue Cole

of Lansing, Michigan, age 60, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2009 at Sparrow Health System in Lansing. She was born on June 11, 1949 in Mason, Michigan, the daughter of Walter and Alta (Adams) Marshall. Surviving are her children, Christine Knight, Melissa (Jamie) Marshall, and Sanford Cole. She is also survived by her siblings, Eddie (Bubby) Marshall, Jackie Marshall, and Mike Marshall; her fiance, Robert Bosom; as well as her aunts and uncles. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Lou Haynes and Magalin Bedell. Mary Jo Bachman

of Stockbridge, Michigan, age 65, died June 9, 2009 at Allegiance Health in Jackson, surrounded by her family. She was born the daughter of E. Donald and Jocille (Smith) Dickinson in Stockbridge, Michigan on August 20, 1943. On October 11, 1968 she married Gerald A. Bachman and he survives. Mary Jo loved the outdoors and all of God's creations. Most of all she was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Douglas (Christina) Carley of Tucson, AZ and Laura (Chad Dreyer) Bachman of Cadillac, as well as 10 grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings, Donald (Jo) Dickinson of TN, Susan Fizer of Lowell, and Jean (David) Sweet of Stockbridge. Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents and son, Bradley Bachman. Edward R. Weddon, M.D.
February 12, 1924 - June 9, 2009
of Stockbridge, MI

Dr. Weddon was preceded in death by Willah M. (Skinner), his wife of 67 years; two sisters, Phyllis Willett of Kalamazoo and Ruth Wallace of Otsego, MI; and one grandson, Nathan Todd Weddon in 1987. He is survived by one sister, Marjorie Will of Plainwell, MI. Also surviving are their five children: Todd (Carol) of Vicksburg, MI, Brad (Kim) of Huntington Beach, CA, Patrice (James K.) Johnson of Dansville, MI, Alex (Colleen D.) of Chelsea, and Amy (Terry) Tomlin of Fowlerville; thirteen grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Dr. Weddon earned his medical degree in 1952 from the University of Michigan and practiced family medicine in Stockbridge for over 46 years. He was one of the last physicians to make house calls in the state. He was on staff at Foote Hospital in Jackson for over 50 years. He was past-president of the Jackson County Medical Society, a long standing member of the Michigan State Medical Society, and appointed by Governor Milliken to the State Board of Medical Review in the 1970s.

A WWII veteran, medical corpsman Weddon served in the third army with General Patton and was awarded five battle stars: Normandy, North France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Weddon was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism after giving aid to a wounded U.S. soldier while under fire by German machine guns. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 12, 2009 at 11:00 am from the Stockbridge United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery. Edward J. Klosiewicz
of Waterloo Twp., Michigan

Age 75, passed away at home surrounded by his family on June 7, 2009. He was born the son of Chester and Mary (Sadijia) Klosiewicz on May 14, 1934. On November 23, 1957, in Angola, Indiana he married Arlene M. Platts and she survives. Ed loved to fish for anything that would bite his hook. He loved good food, especially cakes, pies, and cookies. Most of all he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. In addition to his wife, Ed is survived by his daughters, Patricia (John) Fritz of West Branch, Sharon (Raymond) Klosiewicz-Ameel of Waterloo, Elizabeth (Michael) Klosiewicz-Willis of Grass Lake, and Arlene (Kevin) Klosiewicz-Walz of Waterloo. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Chester (Joanne) Kloss of Roseville; brother-in-law, John Kaminiski of Hazel Park; sister-in-law, Ruth Platts of Grosse Pointe; many nieces and nephews; and his dog, Duncan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor Zabik, and his infant daughter, Catherine Mary. Larry V. Mayle
of Chelsea, Michigan

Age 55, passed away June 6, 2009 at his home in his wife's arms. He was born on June 14, 1953 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Victor and Lorena (Faulkiner) Mayle. Larry had lived in the area for the past 12 years and worked for Ford Motor Company for 36 years. He enjoyed deer hunting and fishing, and cherished his grandchildren. Larry was a member of Vandercook Lake Bible Methodist Church for several years. On November 11, 1972 he married Debra Mary Kennedy and she survives. Also surviving are two children, Steve (Tanjala) Mayle of Hudson and Rebecca (Tim) Lilly of Addison; his mother of Warren; mother- and father-in-law, Meredith (Edna) Kennedy of Ypsilanti; one sister, Cheryl (Daniel) Barton of Howell; seven grandchildren; and one niece. He was preceded in death by his father and one infant granddaughter. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 2:30 pm from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home with pastors Christopher Hilling, John Kennedy, and Martin Laramie co-officiating. William D. March
of Ann Arbor, Michigan

Age 57, died suddenly June 3, 2009. He was born the son of William C. and Shirley (Peters) March on October 9, 1951 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. On March 27, 1976 he married Arlene R. (Zahn) and she survives. Bill was a member of Ann Arbor Baptist Church. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Kroger Produce Department after 15 years of service and also retired from Washtenaw County Facilities in 2004. He loved music, fishing, hunting and was a member of the NRA. Bill was very proud to be a recovering alcoholic with 26 years of sobriety. Most of all he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Heidi Shantz, Stacy Rawson, and Sandra Marshall, as well as his grandchildren, Chelsea, Chandler, Chase, Austin, and Jenna. He is also survived by his siblings, Vicki Lambert, Jeffry March, and Sharilyn Sproull. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and aunt, Marie Landers. Leonard R. Edick
of Chelsea, MI

Age 69, passed away June 3, 2009 in his wife's arms. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 13, 1940, the son of the late Russell and Kitty (Wieland) Edick. Leonard served in the Air Force during the 1950s, the succeeded in a wide array of jobs, including trucking and respiratory therapy, before finding his niche selling clothing and charming customers all day. In his spare time, he pursued the arts, drumming for years and taking up drawing, as well as acting and landing a Screen Actors Guild membership. He could throw out words from the New York Times crossword puzzle and the hundreds of books he read about subjects ranging from birds to sailing. Few men could have conversations about so many topics. He loved gardening, spoiling his cat, and impressing everyone with his physical health. Leonard is survived by his best friend and wife, Tina Picano Blay. In addition, he is the Loving Father of John Edick, Kiyoko (David) Julyk, Miles Edick, Ryan Blay, and Dennis Blay; Devoted Grandpa of Noah and Madeline Julyk; and Dedicated Brother of Bob (Molly) Williamson and Rusty (Bo) Sprauer. Alan D. Smith
of Munith, Michigan

Age 45, died at his home on June 2, 2009. He was born on December 10, 1963 in Highland Park, MI, the son of Dale H. and Delores (Hakenewerd) Smith. Alan, although taken too early in life, was a man of many accomplishments. He had helped to raise two very different and independent children and taught them many of life's lessons. Through example he taught his children that at the end of the day there was nothing more satisfying than a hard day's work. Knowing that nothing came free, Alan worked diligently to ensure that his family was taken care of. He was also a very trustworthy friend to all he chose to call his friends. Whenever called upon, Alan would be there to do as much as he could for anyone. With his kind heart and carefree attitude he was a person that many enjoyed the company of. He will surely be missed. He is survived by two children, Brittainy Smith of Manchester and Brandon Smith of Washington; siblings, Cynthia Hakenewerd of Florida, Lori Staniski of Rochester, and Roger (Janice) Smith of Warren; the mother of his children, Penny Henderson of Manchester; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Ruth Cesco of Munith. He is also survived by his mother, Delores Bock of Florida, who says of her son, "This is a son that gave love to me and understanding and helped me by being a friend as well. He put joy in my heart and filled it as well with pride to be my son." He was preceded in death by his father. Fred R. Winkle
of Stockbridge, MI

Age 65, died at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan on June 2, 2009. He was born the son of Wilbur and Leona (Wardle) Winkle on November 1, 1943 in Macomb, Illinois. Fred worked for Palmer Ford where he was a great mechanic and won an award as the best Diesel Mechanic in the State of Michigan. He was also a farmer and firefighter for SAESA for many years. When he was not busy fighting fires or fixing trucks he enjoyed golfing with Kenny, Marty, Don, and Marsha every Sunday morning. Fred was a great father and grandfather and will be greatly missed. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his children, Michelle (Kevin) Bingham of Inverness, FL and Peggy (Heath) Corey of Stockbridge. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Savannah, Benjamin, Nicole, and Myranda, as well as his brothers, Robert (Donna) Winkle of Ypsilanti and Wilbur P. (LuAnne) Winkle Jr. of Ypsilanti. Ralph E. Sharkey
of Chelsea, MI

Age 87 died at home May 30, 2009 surrounded by his family. He was born the son of James V. and Lois (Rix) Sharkey on January 28, 1922 in Redford, Michigan. In April 24, 1944 he married Barbara Jean (May) and she preceded him in death. Ralph served his country in the United States Army during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was an intelligent man and multi-talented. He was able to build anything he wanted and once built a sailboat out of a backyard fence. Ralph loved music and reading. He often conquered the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle and was unbeatable in Scrabble. Ralph was compassionate and generous. He served as a volunteer at the Chelsea Community Hospital and Faith in Action. Most of all he was a loving father and grandfather. Ralph is survived by his daughter Mary Jane (Tim) Eder of Chelsea and his son James A. Sharkey of Lake in the Hills, IL and three grandchildren: Skylar Sharkey, and Haley and Gwendolyn Eder. In addition to his parents and wife, Ralph was preceded in death by his siblings Edward Sharkey, Robert Sharkey, Harriet Baston, Helen Ryan and Marion Helmick, as well as special friends, Marie Horvath and Mary Jane Dettling. Charles W. Jox
of Dansville, Michigan

Age 70, died at Chelsea Community Hospital on May 28, 2009 surrounded by his family. He was born the son of Marshall W. and Bessie J. (Derhammer) Jox on November 30, 1938 in Valparaiso, Indiana. Charlie loved nature, being outdoors watching birds, gardening, and at the end of each day he enjoyed an ice cold beer. He also had a passion for the railroad and trains. He is survived by his children, Amanda (Tom) Jamieson of Whitmore Lake and Erika (Scott) McInnes of Dansville, along with his grandchildren, Nicole, Kayla, and Gabrielle. Also surviving is his brother, Allen (Janet) Jox of Silver Springs, Maryland, and his sister, Sally (Tom) Parsons of Verona, Virginia. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 2, 2009 from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Chuck Foerster officiating. Burial will follow at North Stockbridge Cemetery. Glen Samuel Chrisinske
of Munith, MI

Age 84, passed away at his home on Friday, May 29, 2009. He was born on April 20, 1925 in Pontiac, MI, the son of Albert and Viola (Perry) Chrisinske. On July 1, 1950, he married Mary T. Osterman in Baraga, MI, and she preceded him in death on December 31, 2003. Glen was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II. Glen had lived in the area since 1964, moving from Jackson. He worked for the State of Michigan for 25 years, retiring as Farm Superintendent of Jackson State Prison. He and Therese traveled extensively, including Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Bullhead City, AZ. He truly loved hunting at the family cabin in the UP, fishing, gardening, farming, bird watching, and reading Louis L'Amour books. Along with his wife, he founded Chrisinske Farms, which is still being run today by his son, Frank, and his grandson, Scott. He was a hard worker but always found time to attend his sons' ball games and participate in Boy Scouts. Surviving are three children, Chuck (Carol) Chrisinske of Munith, Dave (Sharon) Chrisinske of Allendale, and Frank Chrisinske of Munith; five grandchildren, Brian, Scott, Eric, Mark and Matthew; four great-grandchildren, Daniele, Lance, Logan, and Nathan; and one brother, John "Jack" Chrisinske of Byron. He was also preceded in death by one son, Michael Chrisinske, and one brother, Roy Chrisinske. A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, June 7, 2009 at the Chrisinske Farm, 8320 Territorial Road, Munith, from 2-5 pm. Age 63. On May 21, 2009, following a long and courageous battle with cancer, Jim passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born February 28, 1946 in Detroit, MI to Charles E. and Leah Ghent. He attended Michigan State University where he met his wife, Carol (Fillinger). He graduated from Wayne State University. Carol and Jim were married March 23, 1968 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor. MI. In 1996, following 26 years of service, Jim retired from the Ann Arbor Police Department where he served as a patrol officer, detective and polygraph examiner. In 2002, he became a partner in Ghent - Ellerbrake & Associates LLC Polygraph and Investigative Services. Jim was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be remembered for his generous spirit and uncanny ability to make each person he touched feel special. He had an insatiable appetite for knowledge which made him a trivia expert. He was worldly yet equally content to just sit on the deck in the morning sunshine with his dog Sammy, a Diet Pepsi, chocolate muffin, and daily paper (always the funny pages first). He had a passion for the outdoors and spent many an hour pulling fish from the northern lakes or chasing an elusive bird through the Michigan woods. In addition to his loving wife of 41 years, Jim is survived by daughters Kelly (John) Poszywak and Jennifer (Julian) Mason; four grandchildren: John Charles Poszywak; Oliver James, Leah Ann, and Maxwell Stuart Mason. Also surviving are his sister, Suzanne Gray (Jack) Granger and her son William "Alex" Gray, brothers and sisters in-law, and a host of adored nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. A service celebrating Jim's life will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, June 5, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church, 1501 West Liberty, Ann Arbor, MI. Glessie Warrens
of Munith, Michigan

Age 68, passed away Monday evening, May 25, 2009 at Allegiance Health in Jackson. She was born on July 3, 1940 in Garrett, Kentucky, the daughter of Woodrow and Artie (Wallen) Patrick. Glessie had lived in the area since 1953. For almost 30 years she worked for Chelsea Community Hospital in several different areas. Gardening, playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren she loved, however, helping people came to her naturally. On September 5, 1959 she married Garlen Warrens and he preceded her in death on April 13, 2008. Surviving are three children: Patricia (Michael) Blair of Munith, Richard Warrens of Munith, and Douglas Warrens of Jackson; six grandchildren: Jennifer, Stacy, Nicole, Ryan, Richard Paul, and Alicia; five great-grandchildren: Kylie, Emma Lou, Dominik, Conner, and one on the way; brothers and sisters: Tessie Warrens of Munith, Bertha Phelan of Grass Lake, Leonard (Linda) Patrick of Litchfield, Jerry (Pam) Patrick of Jackson, and Jeanette (Wes) Gipe of Munith. Also surviving is one brother-in-law, Jimmie Elliott. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Bob Patrick and Terry Patrick; and one sister, Janice Elliott. Lawrence L. Bower
of Munith, MI

Passed away Saturday, May 23, 2009, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. Born July 21, 1938, in Romulus, MI, Larry was a veteran of the U.S. Army, honorably discharged in 1963, and worked for General Motors for 30 years.

Larry's interests included hunting, fishing, gardening, cooking, canning, and sharing the fruits of his labors. He maintained and enjoyed his beautiful yard and garden, and eagerly helped others when they needed help.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary K. (Rowan) Bower, foster son, Lenny and his family, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Dorothy (Boike) Bower, his brother, Harold Wm Bower, a nephew, and a niece.

Visitation Tuesday, May 26, from 2-8 p.m. and funeral service Wednesday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea, MI Reverend Larry Rubingh officiating. Burial will take place at Michigan Memorial Park in Flat Rock, MI, Thursday, May 28, at 11 a.m. at graveside.

Maxwell A. Elliott
of Chelsea, MI
formerly of Ypsilanti, MI

Age 96, died at the Chelsea Retirement Community on March 19, 2009. He was born the son of Alexander R. and Kathron Mae (Kimmel) Elliott on September 18, 1912 in Comins, Michigan. On January 24, 1942 he married Lila (Liimakka), and she preceded him in death in 2004. Max loved to dance and enjoyed playing golf. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Ypsilanti where he was a member of the Vestry and he was also a member of the City of Ypsilanti Planning Commission. Most of all, he was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Max is survived by his children, Maxine C. Moulton of Chelsea and Marsy A. (Dennis) Doan of Chelsea. Age 78, died on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born on May 15, 1931 in Stockbridge, the son of Edgar H. and Marie (Stitt) Switzenberg. John had enjoyed spending the winter in Lakeland, FL for the past 10 years. He worked for the Waterloo Mink Ranch and Feed Elevators at Stockbridge and Wards. He also worked for Bendicts and Federal Screw. In addition to tending roses in his flower garden, he loved bowling, fishing, and animals. He is survived by his children: James (Susan) Switzenberg of Stockbridge, Carol (Michael) Vichinsky of Chelsea, and John D. Switzenberg of Stockbridge; his loving companion of 35 years, Alice Othelia Atwood of Jackson; step-children: John A. Aldridge of Virginia, Alice (Ronald) Wood of Kalamazoo, Barbara Jean Crowley of Jackson, Donald (Carol) Atwood of Jackson, Karen (Larry) Cobb of Traverse City, and Cynthia Atwood of Eaton Rapids; brother, Robert Switzenberg of Leslie; sister-in-law, Alice Switzenberg of Mason; 27 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Donald R. Switzenberg; step-son, Kenneth Aldridge; brother, Dale Switzenberg; and sister-in-law, Jean Switzenberg. Age 62, died in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday, May 9, 2009 while traveling. He was born on May 17, 1946 in Tecumseh, Michigan, the son of Richard and Martha (Patrick) Fletcher. He is survived by two sisters, Jean Minix and Janet Osburn, both of Pleasant Lake, and his nephew, Kim (Patti) Allen of Jackson. Frances J. Cole
of Stockbridge, Michigan

Age 83, died at the Medilodge Care Facility in Howell on May 13, 2009. She was born the daughter of Charles and Marguerite (Killam) Ruggles in Milford, Michigan on November 4, 1925, the same day as her father. On February 7, 1943 she married Robert H. Cole and he preceded her in death on November 22, 1984. Frances worked for Bookcrafters for many years. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling, and going out to eat. Most of all she loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren. Frances is survived by her children, Robert (Sharon) Cole of Gregory, Raymond (Gayle) Cole of Fowlerville, William (Lucinda) Cole of Frankfort, and her son-in-law, Warren Krueger of Gregory. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Sheri Krueger, her brothers, Charles and Robert Ruggles, as well as her sisters, Georgia Stipcak, Ruth Teachout, and Betty Schubert. Alva L. Nichol, Sr.

Age 71, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009 surrounded by his family and the wonderful folks at CareLink of Jackson. He was born July 19, 1937 at Rowe Memorial Hospital in Stockbridge, MI, the son of Alva C. and Lila (Welton) Nichol. On August 12, 1988 he married Sally J. Abbott in Stockbridge and she survives. He graduated from East Jackson High School and worked for many years as a supervisor for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and then in the Business Department for the State of Michigan. Alva loved gardening, Tiger's baseball, and spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his wife he is survived by three children, Clarke (Cindy) Nichol of Jackson, Alva Jr. (Lisa) Nichol of Holly Springs, NC, and Alicia "Penny" (Ronald) Mazur of Clayton, NC; one step-daughter, Elizabeth (Jack) Anthony of Charlotte, NC; six siblings, James Nichol of Jackson, Gary Nichol of Jackson, William Nichol, of Jackson, Nancy Hoyt of Harrison, Sister Elizabeth Ann CSSF "Kathleen" Schilling of Wyandotte, Janice Nichol of Jackson, and Patti (Gary) Sanders of Vandercook Lake; one sister-in-law, Jane Nichol of Jackson; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Marjorie Abbott of Stockbridge; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Michael D. Goodwin
of Grand Ledge, formerly of Chelsea, Michigan

Age 70, passed away at his home on May 1, 2009 after a long battle with kidney and heart disease. He was born on February 19, 1939 in Reed City, MI to Helen (Vought) and Carlton Goodwin, who preceded him in death. Mike will be lovingly remembered by his surviving wife, Dale (Hughes), and his children, Michelle and Michael; his sister, Betty Goodwin of Hawaii; his brother, Tim Goodwin of Grand Rapids; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Terry. He was a veteran of the Army and served in Korea in the DMZ. Mike was a graduate of the University of Michigan where he earned a degree in Chinese and he earned a Master's in Linguistics from Georgetown University. He was employed by the U.S. Government in Washington D.C. before he returned to Michigan in 1975 to own his own business. He and his family purchased the North Lake Country Store in Chelsea in 1983 and after success in this venture went on to start Mike's Deli located in downtown Chelsea. In 2002 Mike retired and moved with his wife to Grand Ledge where he worked part-time at Felpausch. Those who knew Mike know he worked hard, loved his family, and made a mean Ruben sandwich. His funny faces, sense of humor, and gentleness will be missed most of all. Age 85, died on Friday, May 1, 2009 at her home. She was born on June 14, 1923 in Fowlerville, MI, the daughter of Ira and Hazel (Nicholas) King. On June 29, 1939 she married Lee Osborne and he preceded her in death on March 21, 1969. Phyllis loved to do word search puzzles, crocheting, and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Judy (Lee) McRae of Temple, TX, Jerry (Debbie) Osborne of Ypsilanti, Kathie J. Osborne of Stockbridge, Leon (Sarita) Osborne, and Lori (Garrett) Scott, both of Texas. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Sandra Osborne of Gregory, and two sisters, Donna Nickerson of Carson City, MI and Jane Bollinger of Gregory, in addition to 27 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Elaine Short; her son, Loy Osborne; her grandson, James Cook; and her siblings, Trula Jackson and Emmett King. Robert "Jay" Rickman
of Munith, MI

Age 51, passed away with his family at his side on Sunday, April 26, 2009. He was born the son of George E. and Susie M. (Conn) Rickman on March 25, 1958. Jay enjoyed riding his Harley and having a good time with his friends. He enjoyed being outdoors, working in his yard, ice fishing, and mushroom hunting. In addition to his parents he is survived by his siblings, Glen D. Rickman of Albion, Perry A. (Diana) Rickman of Rives Junction, Kenneth E. Vera E. Erskine

Age 93, passed away at the Chelsea Retirement Community on April 21, 2009. She was born the daughter of Robert L. and Matilda E. (Prochnow) Stanchfield on December 21, 1915 in Lansing, MI. On July 29, 1935 she married Hank Erskine and he preceded her in death. Vera enjoyed reading, painting, playing golf, and bowling. She also taught Sunday school and worked as a book keeper for many years for the Ann Arbor YMCA, Erskine Welding, and the Humane Society of Huron Valley. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. Vera is survived by her children, John (Ardala) Erskine of Manchester, Janice Sundstrom of Tallahassee, FL, Joan Erskine of Ypsilanti, and Jeff (Michelle) Erskine of Pinckney. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren, as well as her sister, Priscilla Rose. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her four brothers. Julie graduated from Dexter High School in 1988 where she was active in the Equestrian Team. She received her BA in Psychology and Social Work from Eastern Michigan University in 1992. On October 2, 2004 she married Martin E. Duda in Dexter, and he survives. In addition to her husband and her parents she is survived by two siblings, Cindy (Roger) Putz of Houston, TX and Jeff (Barb) Savery of Chelsea; several nieces and nephews; and some very special friends, Nikki, Vanessa, Ellen, Jonny, and Jon. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Earl (Irene) Savery and Darold (Ella) Heidt. Josephine had lived in the Reading area for the past 20 years, coming from the Stockbridge area where she worked for Krummery Farms for nearly 30 years. Surviving are three children, Bonnie Wireman of Reading, Robert (Teresa Martin) Bailey of Pleasant Lake, and Lionel (Laura) Bailey of Jackson; three sisters, Ida (Roger) Frailey of Kentucky, Myrtle (Dave) Emmons of Stockbridge, and Dollie (George) Wireman of Kentucky; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Cole; son-in-law, Dannie Wireman; and five brothers and five sisters. Harry Rickman
of Munith, MI

Age 67, passed away April 15, 2009 at Allegiance Health Hospital in Jackson. He was born on November 16, 1941 in Martin, Kentucky, the son of Charles and Belle (Crumb) Rickman. Harry lived in the area since he was twelve years old. For 20 plus years he was an electrician for Local 252 IBEW out of Ann Arbor, MI. He was a veteran, serving in the United States Air Force. On August 15, 1966 he married Biddie J. McSorley in Jackson, and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Bobbie (Michael) Cox of Jackson and Mary Rickman of Clare, MI; one brother, Paul (Barb) Rickman; four sisters, Noraine (Bob) Stevens, Nelva (Bill) Hoene, Lettie Jo Lindsey, and Bonita Rickman; three brothers-in-law, Robert Hall, Ernest Davidson, and Harold Harrison; and three grandchildren, Shanan Cox, Dustin R. Salyer, and Duane Salyer. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Billie and Charles Jr. Rickman; and one sister, Rosemary Hall. Bill (William Armin) Zincke
of Michigan Center, MI

Passed away April 9, 2009. He was born November 5, 1942 to Armin and Grace Zincke. He is survived by his wife, Sue (Susan) of nearly 29 years and his sister, Marion (Dean) Wortley. Bill graduated from Chelsea High School and served in the U.S. Army, 2nd Brigade, during the Viet Nam War. He retired from Chrysler's Chelsea Proving Grounds in 2000 after 30 years of service. Bill will be most remembered for his sweet smile and quick wit. He was a farmer at heart from the time he was 10 years old, when he hired on with one of the local farmers. He was never able to give up his John Deere tractors. Bill enjoyed being a crew chief for various local sprint car teams during the 1970's, one of which held the track record for a period of time at Butler Motor Speedway. Bill met Sue, the love of his life, at the Chelsea Proving Grounds and they were married April 12, 1980. From that point on they were almost inseparable. The shared hobbies from riding motorcycles and shooting trap to attending auctions and selling antiques. Of late you could find them wintering in Florida and spending the summers on Lake Columbia. Bill will be greatly missed by family and friends. Cremation has taken place and a private memorial will be held at a later date. Age 70, passed away at Munson Medical Center on April 7, 2009. He was born February 14, 1939 in Salyersville, KY, the son of Sterling and Ethel (Howard) Craft. Earl had lived in the Stockbridge area most of his life where he worked as a mechanic. After he retired he moved to Lake City. Earl was an active person. He loved the outdoors, camping, fishing and hunting, and walking. On February 20, 1997 he married Sandra Gillette, and she survives. Also surviving are his five children, Glenn (Tammy) Craft of Houghton Lake, Sandra (David) Allen of Stockbridge, Douglas Craft of Lake City, Dana Craft of Stockbridge, and Michael Craft of Lake City; also eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild, eight siblings: Willma Simmons, Viola (Andy) Medina, Ruthie (Oscar) Medina, and Maxine Owens, all of Stockbridge, Rena (Billy) Fleming of Alabama, Eugene (Flo) Craft of Kentucky, Claudette Taylor of Florida, and Margaret (Dennis) Vercruysse of Harrison; also, many nieces and nephews. Age 56, died on Sunday, April 5, 2009 at his home. He was born on June 6, 1952 in Adrian, MI, the son of Andrew and Rosemary Brown. Dennis enjoyed hunting, fishing, and coaching football. He is survived by four children, Kimberly Brown of Munith, Dennis Brown, Jr. of Grass Lake, Elisha Phillips of Grass Lake, and Steve Ousley of Jackson; two grandchildren, Hailey and Alex Phillips; and the mother of his children, Dorothy Brown. Age 76, died April 2, 2009 at home. He was born on February 22, 1933, in Nankin Twp., MI, the son of Eugene and Josephine (Frantz) Ferrari. On January 9, 1956 he married Susan J. Walk in Garden City and she preceded him in death on July 6, 2001. His true love was farming, red paint (International Tractors), and cats. He served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict, being discharged on March 7, 1955. He is survived by his two daughters, Mary (Steve) Pock of Jackson, MI and June (Joe) Nehi of Riverside, CA, five grandchildren, Johnny, Joey, Jenny (Charles) Martin, Jason, and Joshua, and one great-granddaughter, Olivia S. Virginia worked as administrative assistant to the president of Dana Corporation, retiring after 30 years in 1976. She loved to sew and travel. Age 96, died at the Chelsea Retirement Community on March 19, 2009. He was born the son of Alexander R. and Kathron Mae (Kimmel) Elliott on September 18, 1912 in Comins, Michigan. On January 24, 1942 he married Lila (Liimakka), and she preceded him in death in 2004. Max loved to dance and enjoyed playing golf. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Ypsilanti where he was a member of the Vestry, and he was also a member of the City of Ypsilanti Planning Commission. Most of all, he was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Max is survived by his children, Maxine C. Moulton of Chelsea, and Marsy A. (Dennis) Doan of Chelsea. On January 14, 1963 she married William Davis and he preceded her in death on June 1, 2007. Erma loved sewing, cooking, travelling, telling stories, and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by five children, Tammy (David) Chick of Stockbridge, Ricky (Lisa) Davis of Leslie, William (Marie) Davis Jr. of Byron, Rodney Davis of Stockbridge, and Crystal (George) Chick of Stockbridge. She is also survived by her siblings, Frances, Maggie, Louie, Ralph, Herman, Jordan, and Mary West, all of West Virginia, and 12 grandchildren. Age 73, died Monday, March 16, 2009 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born on November 20, 1935 in Suttons Bay, MI, the daughter of Herman Austin and Elizabeth Lovenia (Fox) Brannan. Russell Robinson

Age 78 passed away at his home on March 9, 2009. He was born the son of Harmon and Ida (Adams) Robinson on August 1, 1930 in Floyd County Kentucky. On September 2, 1950 he married Catherine Bailey in Albion, MI and she survives. Russell loved to ride his motorcycle, he loved family dinners, going to swap meets and traveling with his wife. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Mark Robinson of Jackson, Sheila (Greg) Rexin of Chattanooga, TN, Marilyn (Lyle) Mulholland of Manchester, Vera Robinson of Jackson, Anita Standly of Munith, and Karen (Dave) Hammel of Munith. He is also survived by his siblings Marie Sparks of Star, SC, Myrtle Lloyd of Albion, Ruby Owens Springport, Lester Robinson of Olivet, Diapha Roggenbuck of Parma, Thelma Moore of Mesa, AZ and Roy Robinson of Mineela, TX as well as six grandchildren and two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Harmon Jr., sisters Emma Owsley and Irene Robinson. Age 42, died March 5, 2009 with his family at his side from injuries sustained in an auto accident. He was born on November 28, 1966 in Ann Arbor, the son of John W. and Marjorie (Wheeler) Dunavin. Tim graduated from Dexter High School in the class of 1985. He worked as an Emergency Vehicle Technician for the First In Inc. Company. His favorite pastimes included NASCAR, hunting, fishing, golfing, and playing with his granddaughters, Aoife and Kiera. On March 30, 1991, he married Sandra Smith in Dexter, and she survives. Also surviving are his mother, Marjorie (Gil) Campbell, two step-daughters, Heather Havens and her fiance, Tim, and Stacey (Ronan) Harkin, one step-brother, Carl (Denise) Campbell of Cheboygan, and two step-sisters, Kristin (Brian) Roberts of Chelsea, and Catherine (Nate Walser) Campbell of Grand Rapids, brother-in-laws, Doug (Denise) and Ron Smith, father-in-law, Charles Smith; also several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his biological father, also a step-father, Charles Wylie. Robert P. Shaw
of Manchester, MI

Age 86, passed away Friday evening, March 6, 2009 at the Chelsea Community Hospital. He was born on June 18, 1922 in New York City, the son of Leon G. and Helene P. (Perreten) Shaw. Robert loved the theatre and always played the part whether it be a special family dinner or directing the community play. He also was a member of the Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge Choir and loved to play the harmonica. Favorite pastimes also were trout fishing, walleye fishing, bowling, softball, and coaching little league. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army in the European Theatre. On September 10, 1949 he married Pauline L. Socorelis in New Jersey and she survives. Also surviving are two children, Timothy (Diana) Shaw of Madison, TN and Pamela (Howard) Holmes of Chelsea, and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Shaw. A private memorial service was held on Tuesday at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea with Rev. Kathy Schell officiating. Edward Marshall
of Jackson, MI

Age 75, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the Allegiance Hospice Home in Jackson. He was born on February 23, 1934 in Royalton, KY, the son of Franklin and Elvie (Patton) Marshall. Edward had lived in the area since he was 6 years old. He enjoyed working on cars and his yard. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Army. In 1996 he retired from the Veterans Hospital in Ann Arbor after 17 years. In November of 1959 he married Alta St. Louis and she preceded him in death March 5, 2005. Surviving are one daughter, Brenda Marshall of Jackson; three step-sons, Phillip St. Louis of Jackson, Terry (Jeanette) St. Louis of Portage, and Aldo Ray St. Louis of Mobile, AL; one brother, Arnold Marshall of Michigan Center; one sister-in-law, Jessie Marshall of Pleasant Lake; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Charlie, Robert, David, Daniel, and Willard Marshall, and one sister, Beatrice Arnett. John J. Spellich, Jr.
of Munith, MI

Age 80, died at the Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor with his daughter by his side. John had struggled with various health problems the last year of his life. He was born on December 28, 1928 in Dollar Bay, Michigan to John and Bernadine (Stahl) Spellich. He served in the Korean War to come home and then marry his beloved wife of many years, Crescence Marie (Frazer). She preceded him in death on January 29, 1993. John was at one time very active with the Yankee Air Force Museum and was a member of St. Alexis Parish. He was a lifetime member of the volunteer fire department of Dollar Bay and was also a life member of the VFW Post of Dollar Bay. John worked and retired from Ford Motor Company in Ypsilanti. He loved to work outside and was the handyman to many. He is survived by one brother, Robert (Shirley) Spellich of Sheboygan, WI; four sisters, Lorraine (Donald) Richards of Dollar Bay, Francis of Rossville, GA, Margret of Sheboygan, WI, and Doreen (Dave) Smith of Jackson; two children, David (Linda) Spellich of Livonia, and Bonnie (William) Castleberry of Munith; four grandchildren, Shawn (Debye) Castleberry of San Diego, Jason Spellich of Livonia, Sarah (Rodney) Harper of Howell, and William (Samantha) Castleberry of Munith; as well as five great-grandchildren, Jonas, Chase and Cooper of San Diego, Hailey and Haiden Castleberry of Munith. John also leaves behind friends who were there when he needed them most. His family would like to thank the wonderful and compassionate care that he received at Arbor Hospice. Jeanette "Jan" H. Sweet

Age 72, passed away at the University of Michigan Hospital on March 1, 2009. She was born the daughter of LaVerne and Delphine (DeMers) Erickson on March 4, 1936 in Rice Lake, WI. On August 19, 1972 she married Mike D. Sweet and he survives. Jan worked as an administrative assistant at the Chelsea High School from 1978 to 1999. Jan enjoyed playing golf, playing euchre, planting flowers in her garden, and watching hummingbirds. She was a member of the St. Mary Altar Society and a member of the Regional Council of Catholic Women. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her mother and two sisters, Diane Lindwall of San Diego, CA and Rosalie Hasenfus of Boothbay Harbor, ME. Also surviving are her children, David (Julie) Proctor of Harrison, Lori (Terry Iles) Butler of Chelsea, Janis Weston of Chelsea, Barbara Lebel of West Palm Beach, FL, Margaret Sweet of Chelsea, Philip (Keely) Sweet of San Francisco, CA, and Lt. Col. Richard (Lara) Proctor of Navarre, FL, and 14 grandchildren. Jan was preceded in death by her father and her daughter, Julie Proctor. James Samuel Worden
of Munith, MI

Age 79, passed away at his home on Monday, February 23, 2009. He was born on February 14, 1930 in Grass Lake, MI, the son of Vere Foster and Ella Rhea (Bloom) Worden. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Doris (Medley); his children, Brenda Sue Heistan, Mary Wendall (Danny) Ashby, Robert Samuel Worden, Ann Marie (John) Williams, and Laura Leigh (Mike) Siciliano; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, R.V. Worden, Richard Worden; and his sister, Betty Cowan. Jim served in the 31st Infantry Division, South Carolina and 3rd Infantry Division, Korea. Jim was a licensed builder, carpenter, brick, block, and stone mason, wood carver, and published poet. Private services were held on Friday at Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home in Stockbridge. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Great Lakes Hospice for their wonderful compassion and care. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at his home in the afternoon on Sunday, July 5, 2009.

Estill Lee Shepherd
of Munith, MI

Age 76, passed away at home surrounded by his family on February 25, 2009. He was born the son of Estil and Stella (Arnett) on July 11, 1932 in Greenwich, Ohio. On June 24, 1955 he married Hessie Craft and she survives after 53 years of marriage. Estill loved the outdoors where he enjoyed hunting, fishing and finding Morel mushrooms. He also enjoyed cooking, gardening and retirement after 34 years of service to Fab Alloy. He was a Veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion in Warsaw, IN. Most of all he loved his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Kim (Barb) Shepherd of Rives Junction, Rita Jewell of Jackson, as well as his grandchildren, Aaron (Angie) Shepherd, Cortney Shepherd, Jessica Jewell, Billy Jewell, and Adam Jewell. Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Silas Shepherd; his siblings, Don (Bonnie) Shepherd, Ruth (Leon) Younce, Ronnie (Wanda) Shepherd, Eddie Wayne (Barbara) Shepherd. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Eva Jean Ford and Barbara Snell, his son-in-law, Billy Jewell and great-grand daughter Victoria Brower. Juanita D. Smallwood
of Manchester, MI

Age 80, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2009. Juanita worked for 29 years at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was an active volunteer with Meals-on-Wheels in Chelsea. In addition, she was an avid participant with the Chelsea Senior Center and had a great affinity for bowling. Juanita was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and a loyal friend to many others. She always lent a helping hand and truly loved her children, grandchildren, and many friends. She will be truly missed. Juanita was born in Roanoke, VA on December 16, 1928, the daughter of Frank and Dorothy Stover. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Paul D. Smallwood, and one granddaughter. She leaves behind five sons and one daughter: Doug (Nicolette) Smallwood, Patricia (Gary) Gorham, Paul (Dawn) Smallwood, Kelvin Smallwood, Bruce (Debbie) Smallwood, and Hugh Smallwood. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jennifer, Michael, Jason, Christina, Eric, Ryan, Heather, Steven, and Matthew, and two great-grandchildren, Reagan and Saebrianna. Douglas M. Thibeault

Age 58, passed away Monday, February 23, 2009 surrounded by his family. He was born on August 16, 1950 in Wyandotte, MI, the son of Francis X. and Ilene K. (McMillan) Thibeault. Douglas lived a quiet life and he loved animals, especially dogs, in addition to classic car shows and restoration. In addition to his parents he is survived by one sister, Roni (Lenard) Kass of Taylor, MI. He is also survived by two nephews, Randy (Kim) and Sean (Corinne); one niece, Stefanie; one great-nephew, Bryce; and one great-niece, Bailey. Dr. James Kelso Dent

Age 91, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 in Street, MD. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Emma Kalmbach Dent. He is survived by two children, Laurel J. Dent and Paul M. William Hawks, M.D.
of Gregory, MI

"I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and found that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy." (Rabindranath Tagore) This is the mantra that drove Dr. Bill Hawks to live his life in service to mankind.

Dr. Hawks died peacefully in comfort and grace in the home that he loved tucked deep in the woods near Chelsea. He was cared for to the end by his loving wife of 18 years, Kathryn, who is a Registered Nurse.

Bill was born to William and Virginia (Mosier) Hawks on January 11, 1934 in Buffalo, NY. He graduated from Wayne State in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics. He found work with Chrysler at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama and USAFTA. He moved to southern Italy and then western Turkey and worked as the Inertial Guidance systems engineer for the Jupiter Missile program. Slowly he came to realize that he didn't want his life's work to be about aiming hydrogen bombs at Russia and so he moved from Ismir, Turkey to Ann Arbor and enrolled in U-M Medical School, graduating in 1967.

He interned at SJMH and completed his residency in Ophthalmology in 1971. Dr. Hawks served on the medical staff at SJMH for 30 years and at Chelsea Community Hospital for over 37 years where he also served on the Board of Trustees. He was a U-M Department of Ophthalmology clinical faculty member from 1972 to 1992 and sat on the U-M Medical School admissions board for 10 years.

Dr. Hawks' volunteer work spans 4 decades and he has traveled around the world seven times restoring sight to blind people in the world's poorest of the poor nations. He has been a consultant for Helen Keller, WHO and the SEVA foundation. His work took him to Morocco, Tanzania and Malawi. He had worked in Guatemala, India, the Aleutian Islands and many 2-3 month long trips to Nepal.

Bill leaves two children: Kirk (Ardella) and Karen (Jerry) Musgrave, four grandsons: Jason Musgrave, Jordan, Calvin, and Landan Hawks. A brother Ray (Cozy) resides in Florida. Bill's former wife and the mother of his children, Beverly, preceded him in death.

Two weeks before Bill died, a Celebration of Love and Life was held in his honor. 130 invited friends and family came to speak their appreciations and gratitude for his influence in their lives. As news of the Celebration event was conveyed around the world to the teams Bill has worked with from SEVA, emails began pouring in from all over the U.S., SEVA headquarters in California and from hospitals in India as well as from his local patients. Bill spent his finals days hearing messages such as:
"...your intention has always been pure and so had your heart and when the time comes, you will be able to rest secure in the knowledge that you have touched so many with such pure love that you carry our hearts and love with you wherever you go..." and "you would be proud to see the fruits of all the work you did for many years, the untold thousands who have benefited..." and "because of the talk you gave in 1980, I am now doing volunteer work" and "With sadness I hear of your illness but do not be afraid, your soul knows the way."

George H. Bellairs
of Chelsea, MI

Age 87, died Friday, February 20, 2009 at the Chelsea Community Hospital. He was born on August 12, 1921 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of George H. Sr. and Mina (Stradling) Bellairs. Mr. Bellairs had lived in the area for the past three years, coming from Pleasant Lake where he owned and operated a fiber farm with his wife. He also worked for Bell Telephone Company for 35 years, retiring in 1986. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corp., being discharged on December 31, 1945. On June 20, 1941, he married Gloria Y. Gerren in Petoskey, and she survives. Also surviving are five children, Beatrice (Lowell) Fisher of Missouri, Yvonne (Eric) Jenkins of Dexter, George (Stephanie) Bellairs of Texas, Michael (Sheri) Bellairs of Munith, and Lisa (Ron) Jackson of Ann Arbor; also, five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from the First Baptist Church in Stockbridge with Rev. Brian Johnson officiating. Myrtle Prater
of Munith, MI

Age 88, passed away February 17, 2009 at home. She was born on March 16, 1920 in Ivington, Kentucky, the daughter of George and Mousie (Fletcher) Cole. She took pride in foster parenting more than 30 children. She enjoyed gardening, shopping, and going to church. She was a charter member of the Church of God in Stockbridge, Mich. On September 12, 1938 she married Venson Prater in Royalton, Kentucky. She is survived by two sons, Don (Kathy) Prater of Jefferson, OH and Doug (Kathy) Prater of Munith, MI, one daughter, Jean Tackett, also of Munith, seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, one sister, Sylvia Johnson of Marshall, MI, one sister-in-law, Pearlie Cole of Kentucky, and three brothers, Andy Cole, Ronnie Cole, and Arthur Cole of Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her husband, Venson, grandson, Timothy Ray Marshall, mother, father, and multiple brothers and sisters. Edna Alta Nielan
of Stockbridge, MI

Age 95, passed away on February 16, 2009 surrounded by her family. She was born on September 20, 1913 in Highland Park, MI, the daughter of Benjamin and Ida J. (Measel) Moore. On August 15, 1935 she married John E. Nielan in Detroit and he preceded her in death on September 15, 1990. Edna had lived in the area since 1995, coming from Bloomfield Hills. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, reading, and cooking. She is survived by two children, Patricia Simons and John (Diane) Nielan; five grandchildren, Christine Nielan, Jonathan Nielan, Patrick Johnson, Mark Johnson, and John Simons; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may be made to either Great Lakes Hospice or Mason Meals-on-Wheels.

James Arnold
of Pinckney, MI

Age 66, passed away on February 15, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born the son of Rudolph and Martha (Chedrick) Arnold on March 29, 1942 in Harrisburg, PA. On June 15, 1963 he married Georgia M. Alder and she survives. Jim loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and chopping wood. He loved sports of all kinds, especially football and baseball. Jim could fix anything that was not working properly. He was a friend to everyone and would give anyone the shirt off his back. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his children, Martha (Ron) Ehmann of Indian River, MI and Leslie (Pastor Jerry) Gould of Stockbridge; his mother, Martha Norton of Bloomfield Hills; and a brother, Michael D. (Vickie) Arnold of Bloomfield Hills. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Justin James, Danielle Marie, Jacob Spencer, Rebecca Lauren, Andrew Benjamin, Thomas James, and Hanna Linsey. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February, 21, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until the hour of service. Samuel Tolken DeCamp

Samuel Tolken DeCamp, 70, of Dexter MI, passed away February 13, 2009 at University of Michigan Hospital from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Sam was born May 18, 1938, in Detroit to Donald and Edythe Tolken DeCamp. He received his undergraduate and Masters in Physics degrees from Dartmouth College. During his 30 years in the aerospace industry, he was internationally recognized for his contributions to the discipline of precision navigation and track guidance. He authored 12 invited international papers on the subject as it applied to aerial application, photogrammetry, and geophysical survey. In 1993, he founded his own business, AgriTrack Systems, Inc. to develop guidance systems for crop dusters, using the emerging GPS technology. In his semi-retirement, he and his wife Martha Drouyor (Belknap) DeCamp moved to Dexter, where he enjoyed performing in the Dexter Community Orchestra, Livingston Symphony Orchestra, and Ypsilanti Symphony Orchestra, as a member of the double bass section. Music on both his bass and piano was his passion! He is survived by his wife Martha; sons: Eric Donald DeCamp and Gregory Lester DeCamp and wife Tina; one daughter, Kristin Lorraine McAllister; their mother, Jacquelyn Wollard DeVall; grandchildren: Heather, Jeffrey, Megan, Ryan, Brittany, Lauren, Kathleen, Matthew and Joel; step-sons: Ralph Belknap, John Belknap and wife Kelly Belknap. Memorial contributions may be made to any of his orchestras or to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dexter, MI. Arrangements are being handled by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, 901 North Main Street, Chelsea. Cremation has taken place. Private burial will be later in Spring Grove Family Cemetery in Cincinnati OH. Visitation will be from Noon to 2 p.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at St. Joseph Church, at the corner of Mast and Territorial Roads in Dexter, with Father Brendan J. Walsh celebrating.

Richard L. Gilloz
of Munith, MI

Age 66 passed away at Allegiance Hospital in Jackson, MI on February 12, 2009. He was born the son of Allen G. and Evelyn N. (Gilbert) Gilloz on July 24, 1942. On November 24, 1993 he married Arlene Paxton and she survives. Dick had a passion for the outdoors where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding snowmobiles, and chopping wood. Most of all he was a loving husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Scott (Leigh) Gilloz of Greenville, OH, Marie (Bill) Chambers or Lawrenceville, GA, Jodi (Charles) Drainville of Las Vegas, NV, Cristy (Ernie) Kovath of Brighton and 13 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Kevin (Kathy) DuBois of Temperence. In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his son-in-law Brian Kovath and his daughter Susan Kimber. At the request of Dick and his family cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will take place at a later date. Arrangements are by the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home.

William G. MacMain
of Pinckney, MI

Age 58, passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2009 while traveling in Munster, Indiana. He was born on April 17, 1950 in Highland Park, MI, the son of William J. and Ruth H. (Hansen) MacMain. On March 5, 2000 he married Connie Fay Manley in Ohio and she survives. Bill loved to hunt deer, turkey, and rabbit. He also enjoyed sports, especially baseball, coaching Little League, and watching his daughter's sports. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their children, Billy (Renee) MacMain of Westland, Jessie R. MacMain of Stockbridge, and Justin Kenyon of Garden City, and three grandchildren, Billy III, Joe, and Kelly. There are no formal funeral services planned. The family will receive friends at Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home in Stockbridge on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the family.

Rita Versailles Collins
of Chelsea, MI

Age 95, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2009 at Chelsea Retirement Community, Towsley Village. She was born on July 16, 1913 in Lake Linden, MI, the daughter of Alfred and Mary (Eggelston) Versailles. She was a graduate of Northern State Teacher's College in Marquette, MI. She married William John Collins on August 15, 1934 and he preceded her in death on May 28, 1999. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, James of Chelsea and Allan of Tomaqua, PA, and one sister, Sr. M. J. Vianney of Milwaukee, WI. She is survived by one sister, Mary (Walter) Carlson of Merrillville, IN. She is also survived by one daughter, Barbara (Robert) Merkel of Ann Arbor, two sons, David (Patricia) of Poland, OH and James (Florence) of Chelsea, nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and fifteen nieces and nephews. Rita and William (Bill) moved to Chelsea from Stockbridge in 1946. In later years, Rita taught fourth grade at St. Mary’s Elementary School in Chelsea, and also worked in the Dietary Kitchen at Chelsea Community Hospital. She was a gifted piano player, playing entirely by ear. She loved to cook and sew. She and Bill were avid square dancers, many years ago. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Dr. William J. Turner officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the UMRC Towsley Village Heritage Foundation, St. Mary Catholic Church Building Fund, or Silver Maples Endowment Fund. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Ernest Graf
of Dansville, MI

Passed away on February 6, 2009 in Lansing, MI. He was born on January 12, 1915 in Louisville, KY to Gottfried and Anna (Dapp) Graf. He was a lifelong dairy farmer and a member of Millville United Methodist Church where he was recently honored as one of the oldest long time members. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Rosalie (Harold) Paul, G. C. (Gwen) Graf, John (Esther) Graf, and Elizabeth Lytle. He is survived by a brother, Fred (Theda) Graf, a sister-in-law, Irene Graf, and a brother-in-law, Elmer Lytle. Ernest is also survived by the following nieces and nephews: Carol (Harvey) Fanson, David (Wendy) Fanson, Dennis (Shelly) Fanson, DeeAnn (Bob) Picken, Roger (Joan) Graf, Aaron (Kelly) Graf, Ethan (Stephen Lott) Graf, Anna Graf, Kathleen Young, Missy (Dave) Humphries, Chris (Scott) Below, Marilyn (Dean) Katz, Debbie (Pat) Feeney, Mike (Michelle) Katz, Jerry (Sue) Lytle, John (Jamie) Lytle, Brian Lytle, Nancy (Darren) Young, Glenn (Diane) Graf, Renee Galbreath, Jeff (Elizabeth) Graf, Lance (Erin) Graf, Dorene (Charles) Smith, Craig (Laura) Smith, and Curt Smith. A funeral service will be held Monday, February 16, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Millville United Methodist Church. Larry E. Dunlap
of Leslie, MI

Age 64, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Allegiance Health in Jackson. He was born on March 25, 1944 in Jackson, MI, the son of Lawrence and Theselene (McCaslin) Dunlap. Larry had lived in the area all his life and liked cars, drag racing, and spent a lot of time at the American Legion Post 491 of Leslie. For 30 years he worked for General Motors Car Company in Lansing, retiring in the mid 1990's. Surviving are one son, Larry (Tracy) Baldwin of Stockbridge; two sisters, Janet Dalrymple of Kalkaska and Carolyn Dalrymple of Onondaga; and one granddaughter, Katelyn Baldwin. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Leslie American Legion. Expressions of sympathy can be made to Allegiance Health System. Ballard J. Castle
of Stockbridge, MI

Age 71, passed away Saturday, February, 7, 2009 at the Eaton Community Hospice House in Charlotte. He was born on July 19, 1937 in Floyd County, Kentucky, the son of George and Lucinda (Nollan) Castle. Ballard had lived in the area for the past 60 years and was a member of the Good Shepherd Mission. He worked for Palmer Engineers of Holt for 30 years, retiring in 2001. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and his garden. On September 3, 1954 he married Elizabeth Samons in Kentucky and she survives. Also surviving are two children, Christine (Patrick) Foster and Rick (Sandy) Castle, both of Stockbridge; two brothers, William (Tressie) Castle of Stockbridge and Elbert (Nadine) Castle of Mason; one sister, Mary Ann Griffith of Mason; two sisters-in-law, Fannie Castle of Stockbridge and Easter Newsome of Marshall; and two grandchildren, Joshua and Scott Foster. He was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Castle; three brothers, Hillard, Franklin, and Henry Castle; and two sisters Ruby Castle and Phoebe Shepherd. Funeral services will be held at the Good Shepherd Mission with Parson Billy Allen and Rev. Robert Castle co-officiating at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 2009. Mary Laurel Rohrer Reynolds
of Ann Arbor, MI

Age 67, passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at her home. She was born Mary Ann Fox on March 3, 1941 in Kittanning, PA and was raised in Kensington and Chevy Chase, MD. She graduated from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School and attended Marjorie Webster Junior College. She was married to John Milton Parks (deceased) and leaves three sons, Brian Haines, Steven Gerhard, and Shawn C. Reynolds Parks, and a granddaughter, Ashlyn Everly Parks. Ms. Reynolds lived her life with passion and adventure and followed her dreams of owning a small farm where she successfully operated a bed and breakfast inn, "Reynolds House at Stonefield Farm," as well as creating a retreat center for women and her small antiques business, "Reynolds House Antiques." Previous to that, she worked for 12 years as a secretary at the University of Michigan. Her later years there were spent as a secretary and librarian in the Department of Economics. She also managed the health food store for several years, which was then a part of Seva Restaurant in Ann Arbor. In the year 2001 Ms. Reynolds sold her farm and followed another dream of living in Europe. She rented a flat in Italy near the Adriatic Sea for a year where her writing led her to yet another adventure as a travel writer. She wrote articles for Artshowcase, a magazine based in Ann Arbor. Following her year in Italy she moved to Annapolis, MD for two years, but missing Ann Arbor led to her return in 2005, where she continued writing and took up painting. Her life was full and richly rewarded in loving friendships. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2009 at 12:00 noon at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, 901 N. Main St., Chelsea, MI. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Ms. Reynolds will be buried with her ancestors in Kittanning Cemetery, Kittanning, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be given to Dr. Diane Simeone's Research in Pancreatic Cancer.

Douglas R. Johnsen
of Gregory, MI

Age 58, died at home unexpectedly on February 1, 2009. He was born to Raymond and Loretta (Johnson) Johnsen on April 10, 1950 in Redwing, MN. Doug was known around the Gregory area as "The Water Guy." He enjoyed golfing and building things with his hands. He also liked being with his family, especially his grandchildren. Doug is survived by his daughters, Erika Johnsen of Gregory, Teresa Johnsen of AZ, and Laura Johnsen of Ann Arbor. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Libby Johnsen, Caleb Chimenti, and John Douglas Fillinger, as well as his siblings, Karen (Gary) Langer of Ellsworth, MI, Diane Hauschildt of CO, Karla Linhart of Ellsworth, WI, Larry Erickson of Redwing, MN, Frances Peterson, Anoka, MN, and Betty Wiff of Balsam Lake, WI. Doug was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held at the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Larry Rubingh officiating.
